Wellness Wednesday is always our favorite day!

In honor of Purple Heart Day, I'd like to share a story about our client, John Wetzstein, a true American hero. This story comes from an article written by his daughter-in-law, Cheryl.

John reported for duty on his 18th birthday, unaware of the challenges he would face. Before turning 19, he narrowly escaped being killed by German SS officers. His bravery earned him a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, and later, a Purple Heart.

On a fateful night, John's squad was pushing a jeep loaded with ammunition down the road because it wouldn't start. They were suddenly met with a hail of bullets, resulting in the deaths of several squad members. John, unscathed, rolled into a ditch with a wounded squad member who had been shot in the chest. John removed the bullets from his friend's chest, bandaged him as best he could, and covered them both with ponchos. They lay perfectly still all night, listening to the moans of dying American soldiers and the conversations of German soldiers around them. They knew any movement could lead to being attacked with bayonets.

At one point, the Germans tossed a "potato masher" gr***de into the ditch. John managed to move his leg away just before it exploded, avoiding injury once again. Later, the Germans set the nearby ammunition-filled jeep on fire, adding to the peril of their situation.

Throughout the night, Pvt. Wetzstein stayed with his friend, trying to keep him calm. John described that night as a "living hell," but emphasized that "your buddies were everything."

John Wetzstein is a true American Hero. We are incredibly thankful for him and his service.
