Stay aware and safe out there!

Juneau residents should be aware that the heavy rain is expected this weekend, following a week of stormy and rainy weather. Sustained heavy precipitation creates ideal conditions for landslides as the ground becomes saturated with water and loosens soil, rocks, and trees.

Residents on or around slopes are encouraged to stay alert to their surroundings and to follow the latest weather information from US National Weather Service.

See CBJ’s 2022 landslide maps at bit.ly/4dHecI0 for more information—and be aware that nature is not predictable. It is always better to safe than sorry. If at any point you do not feel safe, or if you simply want to take an extra measure of caution, seek shelter away from your home.

No matter where you live in Juneau, it’s always a good idea to plan for an emergency. Take a moment to read CBJ’s Personal and Household Preparedness guidelines at bit.ly/4ga3w6n. A few basic steps—like making a family evacuation plan or putting together a bag of emergency supplies—can make all the difference when you need to react quickly in a stressful situation.

Learn more about landslides at juneau.org/emergency/juneau-hazards under the “Landslides” tab.

For the latest weather updates, follow the US National Weather Service Juneau Alaska. For the latest information from CBJ, visit juneau.org/newsroom.

DEBRIS COLLECTION UNDERWAY

CBJ is working with the State of Alaska to collect disaster debris in the upcoming days. As of today, DOT&PF crews are out in the field picking up an initial round of household garbage, furniture, and other non-hazardous-waste. Please help the crews work quickly by separating hazardous waste from the garbage pile. Hazardous items include cleaning chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, fuel, propane tanks, electronic waste/anything with a batter or cord (except freezers, refrigerators, and AC units).

CBJ will hold a separate collection effort for hazardous waste—stay tuned for details soon. Alternatively, you can dispose of hazardous waste for free at CBJ's RecycleWorks facility. Visit bit.ly/3vlGUwF for more information about household hazardous waste.

EXPANDED HOURS FOR SELF-HAUL WASTE

In addition to neighborhood debris collection by CBJ, Waste Management has expanded drop-off hours for residents who wish to self-haul waste. Starting Thursday, August 8 the landfill will be open to residents on Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. The landfill remains closed on Sunday.

Read more about drop-off requirements and potential reimbursement procedures at bit.ly/4fzTbAi.

See the list at juneau.org/manager/flood-response (click "Local Contractors & Resources"). If you are a local contractor who would like to be added to this list, please contact [email protected].

CBJ is providing this for informational purposes only and at the request of the community. CBJ is not formally endorsing or recommending any individual private business, but greatly appreciates the support the business community in Juneau continues to provide to impacted residents.

Today, the Filipino Community commemorates the 163rd birth anniversary of the Philippines’ national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. We had a wreath-laying ceremony at Manila Square, where Edric Carrillo, FilCom president, and Dante Reyes, former president, gave a few words in honor of his legacy.

Dr. Rizal spoke out against injustice and abuse, and it seems fitting that his birthday falls on Juneteenth. We also commemorate Philippine Independence Day (June 12), though our celebration comes a few days too late. The wreath-laying was followed by a simple yet hearty lunch at the hall. Thank you all for coming out today. Mabuhay po tayong lahat!

06/19/2024

We’re learning something new this Saturday—the cross-step waltz courtesy of former mayor Bruce Botelho!

Our dance afternoons are open to all, not just our senior members, so please come and join!

You are all invited to the wreath-laying at 12:15 pm on June 19 (Wednesday) at Manila Square to commemorate the birth anniversary of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
