Are all donated books sold at The Friends of the Library Amazing Bookstore?

Actually, no. Because of your generous donations, we always have plenty of great titles for sale. Sadly, the sheer amount of donations often overwhelms our ability to store these books. So, to keep these books out of Juneau's overstressed landfill, we have been partnering with the City & Borough of Juneau and Alaska Marine Lines to give these books a new lease-on-life.
Each year we send close to a thousand boxes jammed with up to 20-30 thousand excess books to Thriftbooks.com, a popular on-line bookseller. We receive a percentage for any of our books they sell, and this -- like everything else - - goes to our local Friends of the Library. Books they can't
sell are donated to other eager readers on down the line.

How does all this happen? Twice a year CBJ provides the muscle to get these boxes of books onto pallets -- no small thing - and trucked to AMLs' dock. There, the shipping costs are generously waived by AML and tons of books sail south to new lives and new readers.

The Friends of the Library Amazing Bookstore wishes everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July. The Bookstore will be closed on Thursday to commemorate our wonderful country. Regular hours begin again on Friday, July 5.

The Amazing Bookstore remains closed while the plumbing is being repaired. Drat.

Bookstore update: Sorry, we’re still closed due to plumbing issues. It seems to be a much bigger issue than was originally thought, so we do not have any date for re-opening. We apologize for any inconvenience and are anxious to open again as soon as we can.

Bad news, folks. The mall building is having more plumbing issues, so the Amazing Bookstore will be closed until further notice. Watch this space! (Cute dog face for attention)

UPDATE!! You are Amazing! We now have plenty of bags!

One thing we learned during our recent flooding episode is that we can’t keep boxes of books on the floor. We are looking for plastic crates that we can turn upside down to put full boxes on top to help avoid having to throw out boxes of books in case of another flood. If you have any that you don’t want anymore, please bring them to the store. Thanks!

With winter coming all at once, and with the roads being slick, the Amazing Bookstore may be closed. Your best bet is to call before coming to make sure that someone was able to get there to staff the desk. 907-789-4913. Stay safe, everyone!

The Amazing Bookstore is completely run by volunteers and we could sure use your help! If you have time and inclination, please fill out an application at the desk.

I’m sure that everyone knows that all the workers at the Amazing Bookstore are volunteers. We have realized that we could use another type of amazing volunteer. We are looking for a special one or two people who could be on call to help out with some maintenance at the store: replacing light bulbs; hauling stuff to the dump; light electrical fixes (and other needs may be realized in the future). If you are that special person, please stop by the store and pick up a volunteer application. THANK YOU!
