✨🎃Please don’t be scared, we’re just spooktacularly excited for fall!🎃✨ I was just reading that most people don’t decorate for Halloween until mid September, but these new Talavera-esque jack-o-lanterns are the perfect fall start, right? From floral designs, to pumpkins covered in monarch butterflies & autumn leaves- I’ve already got mine picked out but am refraining from putting it on the porch until my garden has the right rudbeckias & black fountain grass to compliment. Stop in tomorrow (open 8am to 4pm) to check out River Street Flowerland’s fall colors & decor that’s sure to pumpkin-spice things up! 🎃🧟‍♂️✨👻

Can we ever stop gardening? No!🌺🌿✨ Perennials, Trees & Shrubs are now all on sale! Beginning today, 8/16/24, take 20% off the original price of any of these beauties!! Really there’s too much to highlight, but I wanted to share some of the bountiful blooms you can see right now at River Street Flowerland. Globe thistle is one of my personal favorites because somehow all the critters in my yard have learned to leave it alone (hopefully I didn’t just jinx that🤞). There’s also some adorable dianthus, and some native evening primrose. These massive perennial hibiscus are sure to make a statement- my favorite colors right now are ‘Summer in Paradise’ and ‘Summer Spice Brulee’. ‘Honeysong Purple’ Stokes Aster & Ironweed ‘Southern Cross’ are pollinator favorites- but I didn’t mean to skip the handful of anemone flowers coming into bloom, great for bouquets even into the fall! Out in trees & shrubs we have some sweet Rose of Sharon, another pollinator favorite Bluebeard, and my personal favorite hydrangea ‘Oakleaf’ that’s really come into its mature color. For some more great color check out Sumac ‘Tiger’s Eye’ that turns a fiery orange in fall! Some great evergreen varieties still available are Japanese pine ‘Golden Ghost’ and this fantastically fringey hybrid pine ‘Weithorst’ (already producing pinecones!). For pals of pollinators also check out the profusely blooming Seven-Son Flowering shrub that we have in a few varieties: ‘Temple of Bloom’ & ‘Tianshan’.
In short: there’s so many flowers still at the garden center, and now they’re on sale! If you have any holes in your garden or just wanted to start another it’s a great time to do so. We can’t wait to grow more with you!

Annual Rudbeckia are now Buy-One-Get-One at River Street Flowerland!🌼🌿 these 6” pots of brightly colored annual flowers make for the perfect transition to fall (I know, it feels too early but sometimes our gardens need a little fluffing!). While they are annuals, these varieties often reseed themselves so we can cross our finger for more flowers next year🤞 Rudbeckia are great for pollinators & even rather cold hardy, so you can count on color until it gets chilly! Plus, fun fact, Western Michigan University colors were inspired by the brown-eyed Susan’s endemic to southwest michigan, so adding the classic brown & yellow to your yard is a like a little tribute to our local college!

the many colors of hydrangeas at River Street Flowerland

06/07/2024

Even a windy weekend is well spent at the garden center🌬️🌸💕 this weekend Hydrangeas are 20% off at River St Flowerland (6/7 & 6/8)! Enjoy the breeze & lots of sun strolling through the greenhouse. With lots in bloom & so much to see, we’re almost positive there’s something here for every gardener!
Hydrangeas make a great addition to just about any garden. These hardy shrubs come in a number of shapes, sizes & colors, from big leaf, to oak leaf, to panicle or climbing, the colors range from white, to blue, to purples & pinks (though one of my favorites is lime!) They grow best in part sun, but certain varieties can tolerate shade or sun. Relatively long bloomers for a shrub, we like to leave most of the flower heads on those in our garden because they make such interesting dried flowers & the birds will use them to build their nests come winter. Alternatively, dry flowers by cutting them just after peak color, removing the leaves & placing in a bucket of water somewhere cool, dark & dry. From there I love to shake the flower heads & make floral confetti!
The landscaping or crafting use is all up to you, but we definitely recommend checking out our hydrangeas! Stay tuned for more photos; All the colors today really ‘blue’ me away😅

💫☄️🪐Have you heard of ‘hortofuturism’? Better Home & Gardens talks about this trend in gardening towards things sci-fi, brightly colored & a little alien, thanks to newer home owners’ affinity for the genre. Today I thought we’d look at some of River St Flowerland’s coolest neon green/chartreuse foliage & later on we’ll share more ‘neon’ plants & alien textures. Hope you all enjoy & have a wonderful weekend in the garden- this weather is perfect for it!!💫☄️🪐

We let our garden inspiration lapse for a week but we’re back with a fresh theme: Dr. Seuss!🌿✨🌸 walking around the greenhouse lately there’s been an abundance of funky flowers that would fit any Seuss garden; Cat in the Hat, the Whoville families & even some that are the Lorax’s favorite color: Truffula Pink! The first plant really kicked this off with a name like that- ‘Truffula Pink’ is a Proven Winner variety of gomphrena, an annual fuzzy flower that blooms profusely in full sun! From there we’ve included ‘Kangaroo Paws’ another awesome, fuzzy, full sun annual that the last few years has bloomed into the fall for us! Keeping with the fantastic fuzzy textures we also have celosia & mulla mulla plants that even dry really cool (perfect for the late summer/early fall craft!). You can even make your own Seuss scene by potting up a twisty bonsai & adorning it with a Thing 1 or Thing 2😅 from there we moved into our perennial section’s fun little Lychnis (these especially remind me of Horton Hears a Who) & one of my personal favorite plants ‘Red Feathers’ echium! ‘Red Feathers’ is usually straight upright, but many of our plants have bloomed so heavily this year they’re getting these great wonky shapes! What do you think? The colors of lupine surprise us every year too & I just love how the tightly closed buds look. Finally we’re out in trees where I’ll ask you to ignore the Narnia-esque statue & look at this amazing Blue Altas Weeping Cedar! I could’ve sworn the variety had ‘serpentine’ in the name because the trunk is so magnificently curled back & forth. The other tree we’ve included this morning is a Purple Fountain Beech for its lovely draping, purple foliage- but for a more colorful option we even have tricolor beech trees (pink, burgundy & cream on the same leaf!).
Thank you all for a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend, it was our busiest yet! Our ongoing love of plants is fueled by our customers & their interests, so it means so much to have a community just as excited to grow as we are. We just can’t thank all our plant pals enough💕🌿🌸✨

Water plants are now available at River Street Flowerland!🪷 Water lilies, moneywort, pitcher plants, rain lilies, water iris, water celery & floating arrangements is just a little preview of what’s available! Don’t forget Monther’s Day is this weekend, (Sunday May 12). If your mom has River Street Flowerland on her list make sure to get in today or tomorrow (we’re closed on Sundays!)

05/08/2024

What an evening/night! Thank you all for your thoughts, well wishes & messages of concern yesterday and this morning. It’s so incredibly touching to have a community that cares. We are lucky that River Street Flowerland was not hit & this morning’s clean up just meant a little extra squeegeeing💦 we’re certainly grateful to see the sun☀️ our hearts & thoughts are with our neighbors in Portage & throughout SW Michigan that were affected by yesterday’s tornado. Let’s all do what we can to support them these following days & weeks❤️

🕷️🕸️🖤✨Goth Garden Inspiration pt.2✨🖤🕸️🕷️ we had so much fun with the last round & we found so many more moody & mystical plants that it could be a series! Today we went with a little more reddish/black color scheme, inspired by the garden dragon & Japanese maple in the first photo. We’ve got some really awesome dark-leafed trees like smoke bush, barberry & and new hydrangea variety called ‘Eclipse’ (see what it looks like in bloom at the bottom of photo). In annuals we have psuedoranthemum (my personal favorite dramatic foliage), Mystic dahlias with incredible dark, feathery foliage, and ‘Royal Hawaiian’ colocasia. Colocasias can grow indoors or out! Inside they’d prefer a bright; indirect spot, but outdoors do better in relatively protected, shadier spaces. We also have ‘Redemption’ colocasia, in both 12” pots and 5”! I included some houseplants I thought fit the goth vibe too: Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret’ and ‘Raven’ ZZ plant. Let us know what you think of these & keep your eyes peeled for another installation of goth garden inspiration again soon! 🕷️❤️🕸️✨🖤

Early spring flowers will always have a special place in my heart for the way they remind us we can grow again! Plus rhododendrons are a pollinator favorite, which is always something we could use more of! Did you know azaleas have been reclassified as rhododendrons? It’s kind of like the square/rectangle relationship, all azaleas are rhododendrons but rhododendrons are not all azaleas. They’re main difference is that most azaleas’ leaves will turn bright red in the fall before dropping, where as rhododendrons stay evergreen. Also azalea flowers are a little smaller, and often fragrant. All that being said, they both make for a great flowering shrub in part sun or shady areas of the garden. Pictures are from this morning with fresh rain🌧️🌼🌦️🌸😊
