It takes a village around here. Thanks to the host of River Trade Radio, KKFI volunteer and union electrician Scott Stanton, who installed some LED lights and a dimmer switch in our new Production Studio 2. They’re bright and totally quiet! 🎙🎚💡📻

What does Kansas City jazz sound like today? Thankfully, it sounds like Marcus Lewis, Eddie Moore, Alaturka and so many more genre pushing artists. KKFI 90.1 FM is proud to amplify their sound with our 100,000 watts of community radio power.

BUT, we can't do it without your support. Call 888-931-0901 or go online at kkfi.org/donate and make a donation to YOUR community radio station.

Tune in 1-3pm to hear this great music, plus Chick Corea, Tivon Pennicott and more. We'll be joined (on the phone) by Marcus as well as former guest DJ Jeff Morgan from Morgan Miller Plumbing.

Happy Birthday Jay McShann!

Jazz pianist Jay McShann was born on this day in 1909 in Muskogee, Oklahoma! For those who know Kansas City jazz, McShann and his musical groups, including the Jay McShann Orchestra and The Blue Devils, were essential to building the city's jazz legacy. He gave Charlie Parker his first big break by touring across the Midwest as a territory band; he'd play at countless jam sessions at Mutual Musicians Foundation; and, one of the most important highlights, he was one of the main ambassadors of the museum when it first opened in 1997 and continued to assist its growth up to his passing in 2006.

One of his pianos sits in our permanent exhibit and he's featured three separate times on our wall of musicians inside The Blue Room. His spirits lingers on throughout our beautiful spaces and through one of our museum's documentaries, "Jazz Is."

Similar to our last post about saxophonist/flautist Frank Wess last week, we know there's been a lot going on in our country and we want to remind you: we are here. We are here as a space of education, entertainment, and enjoyment. Whether you come to us for a COVID-19 friendly visit or engage with our digital resources, we hope you can find some peace with us soon 🎷🏛️

Tune in to Jazz Afternoon 1-3pm on KKFI 90.1 FM / streaming at kkfi.org to hear this classic album, recorded 57 years ago today.

Plus, lots of new music and a light dusting of some holiday music.

On this day in 1963 pianist Andrew Hill was Van Gelder Studio recording Smoke Stack for Blue Note Records

A truly original voice on the piano, perhaps not as celebrated as some of his peers, Hill was an innovative composer as well. This album features a somewhat unusual lineup consisting of piano, two (!) double basses (Richard Davis and Eddie Khan) and drums (Roy Haynes).

Some of today's Jazz pianists whose work was influenced by Hill include Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer, David Virelles, and Simona Premazzi as well as Davis Whitfield and Micah Thomas.

Kansas City history was created on this day back in 1932!

On this day in 1932, the Bennie Moten Orchestra entered the studio for what proved to be its final recording session.

Performing arrangements by Eddie Durham, the band featured such extraordinary artists as Oran "Hot Lips" Page, Ben Webster, Walter Page, Jimmy Rushing, and--most crucially--Count Basie.

Indeed, while these sessions heralded the end of the Moten Orchestra, the loose, swinging, and bluesy arrangements looked ahead to the rise of the Count Basie Orchestra: Count Basie himself would draw heavily from this band's personnel and musical blueprint. While every track from this date is a treasure, "Blue Room" and "Moten Swing" particularly stand out as some of the finest tracks of the era.
