KC’s Time Square

Way back in a time now forgotten and most buildings/remnants now destroyed, there was “The Union”. The convergence of Delaware + Main coming from the River Market intersecting at 9th. Originally a dude named Vaughn capitalized on this vortex with a very cool Victorian building as shown. Then hotels and commerce centered on the activity with the original KC Star location directly behind Vaughn. Note the clock. Just to the left (west) was the largest building in KC at the time built for NY Life with the recognizable tower and Gaugain(?) eagle sculpture presiding over 9th.

Fast forward to the late 20th Century and after KC’s incredibly short-sighted urban renewal devastation and preservationists now part of HistoricKC, Landmark Commission and others rushed in to save the few remaining treasures on West 9th forming a National Historic District - now forgotten by most - but preserving late 1800’s treasures formed aside from NY Life. Today the Historic 9th District as promoted by locals is replete with activity once more with cafes, delis, bakeries, bars, spas, hotels and more bounded by thousands of urban residents to the East in Sky and Commerce towers and West by the Garment District. Enjoy this exploration in urban craftsmanship and the renaissance of vibrancy.
