Shawna has a passion for helping women in all stages of motherhood from prenatal to postpartum and beyond. She graduated from Massage Therapy School at PCI in 2006. After doing standard Swedish massage for several years, she noticed there was a lack of quality prenatal massage in the Kansas City area. While pregnant with her son in 2014, Shawna had her first experience receiving a basic Swedish prenatal massage. Like many new mothers, she struggled with “common pregnancy discomforts” such as P***c
Symphysis and Sciatic pain. Finding no relief in the bodywork she received, she decided to study various pregnancy massage techniques to create – truly therapeutic pregnancy massage sessions that would help alleviate the unique discomforts that come along with pregnancy. This specialty allowed her to formally give “birth” in 2017 to Mama Bear Massage, LLC. With the goal to create more effective therapeutic sessions with the ability for Mom to lay face down and have as normal of a session as possible throughout her pregnancy. Since its creation, Mama Bear Massage has evolved from a Prenatal Massage focus to more of a Medical Massage focus. When is it best to start prenatal massage?
As soon as possible! If Mom wants prenatal massage to be a part of her pregnancy care, it is important to begin sessions as early in pregnancy as possible. Bodywork works best when it can be done throughout the pregnancy to create lasting results and alleviate any preexisting discomforts that can get more inflamed during pregnancy.
Moms who choose massage throughout pregnancy notice a more comfortable birthing experience physically and less anxiety or nervousness during labor.
Prenatal massage does not require a waiting period or a doctor’s note unless there is a high-risk concern. Even then due to our extensive training and education in prenatal and medical massage, there are still many high-risk factors that we can still help with at Mama Bear Massage.
Please always communicate any diagnosis, pre-existing conditions, or high-risk factors/concerns to your Massage Therapist before beginning treatments. You never know what they can help with!

One of the most important things you can do for yourself before and after you get a massage is to drink your water.
Being properly hydrated can greatly improve your massage experience.
Your body will more readily accept the intentional touch and the post-massage detox will be much more effective.
Water is available on site, but make sure you are drinking enough throughout the day before your session as well.
Is pregnancy massage dangerous?
Nope. Massage during a normal pregnancy is not harmful at all.
Massage supports a healthy pregnancy, and does not cause miscarriage or induce preterm labor.
That being said…not all massage therapists or spas who offer prenatal massage have extensive training or experience doing it, and if you are the recipient of one of those massages, you might be left unsettled and disappointed.
Specialization makes a much BIGGER difference than you might think. For instance, a dental assistant knows a LOT about teeth, but she shouldn’t be the one performing a root canal.
