Getting Started with Sport Psychology: Helping Athletes Build a Mental Game Plan 🏆

05/17/2022

What if confidence was a choice and you could always choose it? How great would that be?!

What would you be able to shake off?

-The negative comment your coach made.
-A less-than-stellar last game.
-An error you’ve been playing over and over in your head.
-The fear of losing your starting position.
-The worry of disappointing your teammates.

What would you be free to focus on?

-Your effort. You have so much more energy when you’re not doubting yourself.
-Your composure. You can maintain your fire and keep your cool, when you believe in yourself.
-Your game. You’re free to focus on your skills to deliver the performance you’re capable of.
-Your team. You can be the teammate who picks everyone else up, because you’re in a good place yourself.

You could actually relax and play. Love the game again.

What if that was available to you now? What if you really can choose confidence?

Good news, you can! Not magically of course, that “just believe” stuff doesn’t work by itself, you’ll need some techniques. That’s where we come in!

Join our free 5 Day Sport Confidence Challenge. Daily strategies for choosing confidence delivered directly to your inbox.

Game on, right?! Let’s get this challenge started!

Quiz time! Which statement below best describes you?

I’m currently working with a Sterling Sport Mindset coach and I’m seeing results from the mindset changes I’m making. It’s going by so fast and you don’t want it to end.

I’ve finished 1:1 coaching and would like to stay connected, like a mindset booster.

I’m thinking about 1:1 coaching with you, but want to make sure it’s the right option.

I’m not sure the 1:1 Complete Mental Game Program is in the cards for me, but I REALLY want to get this mindset thing handled. I want to get my confidence back and be able to focus when the pressure is high. I know if I could be less anxious, I could play the way I want, even in big games.

Regardless of where you are, we’ve got the solution…our new Sport Mindset Membership!

Techniques AND support for your goals all in one place. No more wondering what to do and when to do it. No more stressing because you’re not playing or feeling like you. Create and follow your plan, get continued support, and achieve your goals. Starting lineup? College scholarship? Enjoying your sport experience? Staying mentally healthy?

We’ve got you.

The Sport Mindset Membership includes:

PG2P Course: This self-guided sport mindset course has everything you need to develop a complete mental game plan that will get you from pre-game to podium. No time to waste, your sport experience is on the line. We know this and we’re here to help you achieve success. The PG2P mindset plan will work off the court too. No reason not to be great at life and athletics. And life is more fun with a great mindset. Previously this course was only available separately, but we want to make it accessible to our community. Topics covered:

* Imagery - how to actually see it and believe it
* Self-Talk - get your brain to stop arguing and start believing thoughts on purpose
* Take Out Mind Trash - what to do with spiraling negative thoughts
* Intensity - find the right level and adjust to stay in the zone
* Flip the Switch - identify when and how to make it happen.
* Focus - how to control the controllables and let the rest go
* Emotion Management - how to keep your competitive fire in check
* Breathe - harness the power that comes with a single deep breath
* Unflip the switch - how to get out of game mode, it’s pretty important

Q & A Days: You’ll have a place to check in when a complex situation arises or you’re feeling stuck with your mental game. You’ll hop on the zoom meeting with Dr. Linda, Heather, or another amazing coach from our team to get answers to your questions and learn from others in similar situations.

Workshops: We’re offering additional mindset training workshops over several athlete-centered topics.

* Returning from Injury
* Navigating the College Recruiting Process
* Transitioning from High School to College
* Being a Team Captain
* Earning Playing Time
* Handling Coach-Related Challenges
* Thriving in a Toxic Team Environment
* Making Mental Health a Priority
* And more!

You in? Join us! You’re going to be game-ready for sport and life, with performance and well-being techniques for the complete athlete.

Questions You May Have about the Sport Mindset Membership

How much is the investment? Only $48/month (even less if you choose the annual option) for a mental game plan along with access to leading sport mindset coaches and specialized content.

How long will I have access? As long as you decide. When you’re up for improving your mindset to achieve your goals and enjoy a healthy sport experience, we’re in it with you. How’s that for support?!

How long will it take me to go through the PG2P course content in the membership? Depends. The course is no-fluff. We don’t mess around when it comes to your mental game. It’s right to the point. No video is longer than 5 minutes. The amount of time that you spend on the exercises/worksheets in order to make sure the skills work for you, varies greatly by athlete. Spend as much time on them as you’d like. Being thoughtful about the skills makes your game stronger, but don’t get stuck “perfecting” your game plan; you’ve got to put it in practice…literally. Start applying your plan in practice right away.

How is this different from working 1:1 with a sport mindset coach? The 1:1 Complete Mental Game Program is our signature program. It’s the gold standard. With the CMGP, you dive deep into your mental game with a sport mindset coach by your side. This 1:1 option is comprehensive and highly personalized. Along with individual coaching sessions, it includes the CMGP Playbook and outside of session support during the program. Once you’ve finished your CMGP, the Sport Mindset Membership is ideal for maintaining your mindset, navigating new challenges, and expanding your sport mindset skills.

If the 1:1 program doesn’t fit your schedule, situation, or your style, the Sport Mindset Membership is a great self-guided alternative. You can always add 1:1 coaching later.

What if I’m currently a client? This is a great way to continue implementing support beyond your Complete Mental Game Program. You are welcome to join now or sign on after your program. Stay connected with your coach and keep your mental game at a high level.

What if I’m a former client? Welcome back! Join us to reinforce the mindset skills you’ve learned. Perfect for the days when you need a refresher or when you’re ready to step up your game. Reconnect with your coach and learn from others on our team.

How pumped am I going to be that I signed up for this? So pumped! Athletes notice mindset improvements right away. Don’t be surprised when you start crushing goals, playing confidently, refocusing when you need to, and playing “in the zone” more often. You’ll put in the mental reps along the way to make it stick. Revisit the content, videos, and exercises and attend workshops and Q&A sessions as many times as you’d like. As your mental game reaches new levels, you’ll see how the membership content meets you at that new level. You’ll get pumped all over again.

Join us this month as we make our mental health a priority!

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! Throughout the month of May the Sterling Sport Mindset Team is committing to doing one small thing each day to benefit our own mental health.

We know that in life, it’s easy to put other things ahead of your own mental health.

As an athlete you’ve got a million other priorities, so finding time for yourself can be difficult. You’ve got jam packed days with so many other responsibilities your mind is focused on. There’s pressure to make it all happen. And daily stress to check everything off your to-do list as if you could have done it all in your sleep.

With all that you have going on in your life, it’s no wonder mental health is left off the to-do list.

The truth is, the more we focus on our mental health, the better we show up in the other responsibilities we have. You’ll have less anxiety and stress in your day to day when your mental health is a daily non-negotiable. You’ll have confidence in your skills and abilities to take care of business in any area of your life. Most importantly, you’ll find joy in each day!

At Sterling Sport Mindset, we know the importance of mental health! We know that making mental health a priority is a game changer for any area of life.

Because of this we’ve created a calendar that starts today with one small thing you can do each day to take care of yourself. Some might only take two minutes, others might take 20 minutes. But, focusing on yourself always adds up to big results.

Join us throughout this month as we make our mental health a priority.

"Sport parenting isn’t for the weak. Sport parents get a lot of blame. Did you hear the latest 'crazy sport parent' story? 'Can you believe sport parents these days? They’re just living through their kids.' While of course this happens, the majority of sport parents want what’s best for their athletes, they just don’t always know how to go about it.

As a sport parent watching your child on the field, you see an extension of you. A person you’ve loved since day one. When something happens to your athlete on the field, it’s almost like it happens to you. Actually, it often feels worse. As a sport parent, you want to see your athlete achieve their goals. When they’re disappointed about an error or a missed shot, you feel that too. When they fall short of the potential you know they have, you want so bad for them to realize it."
