A MESSAGE FROM YOUR POLICY DIRECTOR TARYN JONES AND YOUR STATE CHAIR-THOMAS ALONZO
For my Kansas friends.
By a vote of 82-43, the Kansas House of Representatives failed to override the Veto of Governor Laura Kelly on SB233 that would have banned gender affirming care.
The bill was an egregious governmental overreach, ignoring the relationship between families, their children and their mental and medical healthcare providers.
The bill was frought with misinformation and extremist verbiage that would not have been good for the people of Kansas.
Thank you to all that made phone calls and sent emails and letters to your legislators. We also thank our allies at Voter Rights Network of Wyandotte County, ACLU, Loudlight, Equality Kansas and many, many other organizations, groups and individuals fighting for human rights in the state of Kansas.
This work is by no means done. A synopsis of the overridden bill is shown below.
Thank you Governor Laura Kelly for striving to do the right thing for all Kansans!
Senate Bill 233: AN ACT concerning children and minors; relating to healthcare of minors; enacting the
forbidding abusive child transitions act; prohibiting healthcare providers from
treating a child whose gender identity is inconsistent with the child's s*x; authorizing
a civil cause of action against healthcare providers for providing such treatments;
restricting use of state funds to promote gender transitioning; prohibiting professional
liability insurance from covering damages for healthcare providers that provide
gender transition treatment to children; requiring professional discipline against a
healthcare provider who performs such treatments; adding violation of the act to the
definition of unprofessional conduct for physicians; amending K.S.A. 65-2837 and
repealing the existing section.

Language is so vitally important in creating a safe space for everyone. You should never use someone's past pronouns or name when referring to them.
Equality Kansas is very grateful for"Music lovers and LGBTQ allies who showed up big time for Equality Kansas on March 9 at the South Central Region's annual Noise For Equality.
