Monk & Honey
6.1% ABV Belgian Single brewed with Coopers wildflower honey from Peculiar, MO.
Monk was inspired by my time living with Monks in Belgium.  Most know Belgian beer for its large and potent examples like quads and tripels, but in reality the brewers who make many of those great beers (Trappists) drink something much lighter.  Often referred to as a “single” or “patersbier”, the monasteries typically brew this beer mostly for themselves to enjoy with a good meal.  Staying in the guest cloister at the monastery they would serve this beer with lunch and dinner.  That lighter beer made to compliment food inspired Monk & Honey.  The monks meals were primarily made from the monastery garden and that “farm to table” vibe is what led me to think of incorporating local honey into the beer as a mild fortifier adding a touch of alcohol and subtle complexity.

In August 2011, a helicopter carrying a group of military service members - many of them Navy SEALs - was downed in Afghanistan. The tragedy is considered the largest single day loss of American lives in the history of Special Operation Forces.

The 30 service members (call sign ‘Extortion 17’) plus one military K9 have come to be known as the ’31 Heroes.’ Years ago, we were approached by some of the local family members of Extortion 17 about brewing a beer in their honor and we released a wheat IPA to commemorate these fallen heroes on the date of the fifth anniversary of the crash. Because we were so overwhelmed and touched by the turnout and response to batch one, we have brought it back as an annual beer, and we are excited to announce this year’s edition will be released on August 17th.

The beer will be available on draft and in 12oz can 4-packs at the brewery along with hats, t-shirts, and glassware. A portion of the proceeds of all Extortion 17 beer during its release weekend will go to The 98 Fund, a nonprofit founded by USMA Class of 98 focused on providing scholarships for children of The Fallen, as well as support and healing for veterans and families.

Hi hello. We would love to reintroduce ourselves. Torn Label: “The name is a reference to the days when I was homebrewing and got tired of scrubbing labels off used bottles,” says Travis Moore, co-owner and former Head Brewer. “Instead I would tear the label off when reusing so I knew when I looked in the fridge a ‘torn label’ was one of mine. Formed out of Rafi and my love of beer and our tradition, going back 20 years now, of gathering around New Year’s to share beers we brought back from traveling, college, and other breweries we visited.”

Hi everyone! This is Rafi with a little news to share with you all. It's been gratifying, humbling and a blast to help conceptualize, create and grow our brewery over the years. Later this month, I will be stepping down from my day-to-day role as CEO of Torn Label. I'll continue to be actively involved as a co-owner, and you'll certainly see me drop by for a beer often. The greatest accomplishment of my time here is bringing together the incomparable, passionate team we have in place, and I have every bit of confidence they'll ensure the only differences you notice are positive ones.

But after over a decade in this role, it felt like it was time for a change and for a new challenge for myself. It's both an exciting and bittersweet moment, and what I'll miss most is hanging out with our wonderful regulars, colleagues, and collaborators. If you'd like to do so one last time and reminisce about the early days, come join me on my last day, next Friday the 14th between 5 and 8pm, and have a few rounds in the Public House. Feel free to dress to impress!
