Lakota Tech High School is pleased to announce the hiring of Theodore “Ted” Standing Soldier, Jr. as the 2024-2025 Head Boys Basketball Coach!

Standing Soldier brings State Tournament experience to a Lakota Tech boys team, who reached the sweet 16 last season.

Born and Raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation Ted Standing Soldier Jr. was born to be a coach. He bagan his coaching career immediately after his High School graduation in 1996. Ted began coaching Little League baseball before going off to play college basketball at the University of Mary(Bismarck, ND) in the Fall. Ted would return every summer from school to continue coaching baseball and knew exactly what his calling was, which was to coach and mentor young people.

He eventually returned home to continue coaching baseball and began coaching basketball at the elementary and middle school level. Taking several coaching positions across the Pine Ridge Reservation, which included OLL, Porcupine Day School, and Loneman Day School before landing his first HS coaching job as an assistant coach for then, boys head coach, Matt Rama. Coach Standing Soldier got his first crack as a head coach when he was hired as the Red Cloud Girls Head coach where he led the team to the State A tournament. Standing Solider would then move on to Little Wound (his alma mater)for 2 seasons and then would coach at Crazy Horse for one season before moving to Rapid City.

Standing Soldier then began coaching at Rapid City Christian helping and assisting with both the boys and girls programs where he ran much of the skill development for the Lady Comets and won the region assistant coach of the year after the girls qualified for the State A tournament in 2022-23 season.

Taking one year off from the HS scene standing Solider focused on his West River basketball program out of Rapid City where players who have come out of his program were experiencing a ton of success as early as 7th and 8th grade by making their varsity teams at their respective schools. The West River Basketball program is one that includes a partnership with Sacred Hoops Basketball Developmental program which he ran and directed for the past 3 years and as well as most recently established Iron Five Basketball program geared to take kids to the next level of gaining exposure to gain the attention of college coaches.

Standing Soldier has 2 sons Timo Standing Soldier who will be 9th grade and Noah Standing Soldier who will be entering 4th grade.

Standing Soldier is excited to get his first opportunity as a Head Coach, for the boys program at Lakota Tech High School! He feels that LTHS has a promising, returning group of great student athletes and is looking forward to playing a style of basketball that is known as rez ball. He adds that the discipline of his teams will be the difference in whether or not these boys will get over the hump and win that sweet 16 game and get into the State A tournament come March.
