Cedrick Owens came to Operation Green Light in 2019 from MoDOT, where he had a successful career as a traffic engineer.

In his role as a Traffic Signal Analyst, Cedrick gathers field data – such as pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle counts and intersection behavior – and analyzes it using software. He works with agency professionals and consultants to arrive at appropriate traffic control solutions and then works to deploy those solutions.

Cedrick leads the team with traffic signal calculations for clearance intervals of red, yellow and pedestrian timing. In the past 5 years, he has programmed more than 65 controllers and modeled 30 intersections – and assisted with many more.

That work is critical because getting it wrong can lead to more crashes. However, quite the opposite occurs because Cedrick’s accuracy is unquestioned.

Cedrick also oversees daily operations across the region to respond to crashes or work zones by changing signal timing as appropriate, and responding to and dispatching support for any signal malfunctions. And, he helps to build Missouri’s and Kansas’ Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program construction projects that total over $1.5 million.

His colleagues say Cedrick is super organized and probably has the cleanest desk in the entire building! He is a very thoughtful and considerate coworker and a can-do team player. He is always up to take on a challenge and whatever he does he always does it well. And, if we had one, he would win the award for saving trees because he rarely prints anything!

Cedrick, thanks for five years of important work – making our commutes easier and the region safer!

U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver II joined local officials today to kick off the Bi-State Sustainable Reinvestment Corridor project. The 24-mile corridor connects four cities in two states and two counties with the goal of implementing plans for a zero-emission regional transit route to support cleaner air.

“I can tell you, as a legislator, it’s much easier to fund projects if people are working together," said Cleaver. “With a concentration on sustainability, public transportation and economic development, this $5.6 million RAISE grant has an opportunity to be a shining example of how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law can create a sustainable, equitable future for an entire region.”

Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City KS's Mayor Tyrone Garner stressed that collaboration and relationships are key to success. “We are a unified Kansas City,” said Garner. "Having these programs and projects that connect people and commerce – we are happy. This is going to be something of great value.”

MARC is coordinating the long-term multi-jurisdictional strategy to support infrastructure, transportation and economic development along this corridor. Multiple organizations and government entities are coming together to thoughtfully develop a specific area in several phases.

Earlier this year, we organized a steering committee of early learning educators, providers, business and civic leaders, and other advocates as part of an effort called Connecting the P.I.E.C.E.S. (Plans to Improve the Early Childhood Education System) KC.

Our first event on July 13 was great! Thank you to everyone who attended the Forum on Early Learning and to those who have joined workgroups as we continue important discussions on ways to improve early learning in the Kansas City region.

We especially want to thank our partners who helped make the forum possible: Kansas Action for Children, Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Kids Win Missouri, and Civic Council of Greater Kansas City.

Michelle Kang, chief executive officer for the The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), was our guest speaker. Thank you, Michelle, for spending a Saturday with us in Kansas City.

for dangerous heat as hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

Our region is under an excessive heat warning until Thursday night.

Remember to check on vulnerable loved ones:
Small children
Older adults
People with chronic diseases low-income populations
Outdoor workers

They have a higher risk of heat-related illness, including heat stroke, difficulty breathing, and cardiovascular problems.

✔️Drink plenty of water and natural fruit juices, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid alcoholic beverages, sweetened beverages and drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea and colas.

✔️Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. If you must go out, use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat.

✔️Avoid going out during the hottest times of the day. Take frequent breaks if working during the heat of the day.

✔️Inside during the day, keep shades drawn and blinds closed. Use air conditioning whenever available. Even just two hours per day in air conditioning can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

✔️Fans should only be used in a ventilated room. Blow hot air out a window with a fan during the day, and blow cooler air in at night.

✔️Take cool (not icy cold) baths or showers. Eat frequent, small meals. Avoid high-protein foods, which increase metabolic heat. Fruits, vegetables and salads constitute low-protein meals.

✔️Do not leave children or pets in a closed vehicle with the windows up. Temperatures inside a closed vehicle can reach over 140° within minutes.

✔️Provide extra water and access to a cool environment for pets.

Housing production in the Kansas City region continues to lag peer metros.
For 15 years, the region has been underbuilding. Our research shows this produced an actual housing gap of 12,000 to 24,000 units.
The lack of supply pushes housing prices and rents higher.
