Van Rossum Dairy
Our story began with the marriage of Henry Van Rossum and Luella Ambrosius on June 18, 1946 in De Pere, WI. Henry and Luella started their dairy farm in the town of Freedom on County Road J. Seven children, Bonnie, Rick, Dennis, Mike, Lyle, Scott and Lisa were born into this close knit family in which humility, hard work, and respect for nature were woven into the fabric of their lives.
Each member of the Van Rossum family has a chapter in the story of this farm and each deserves recognition for their contributions throughout the years.
Rick farmed on County Road U in De Pere for many years, Lyle and Scott farmed the home farm, and Mike farmed since 1982 at the location where his house stands today. At times through the years, the Van Rossum brothers combined their resources; at other times they divided resources, but since 2013, Mike and his wife Mary, have been running the Van Rossum Dairy with the help of cousin, Jason Van Rossum.
The dairy barn currently houses 550 cows that are milked three times a day. A team of three employees work each shift to keep our livestock clean and healthy. A visitor can’t help but notice the neat rows of 160 calf hutches lined up in front of the heifer facility. Calves live in the hutches from birth to 3 months at which time they are moved up to the solar barn. They grow there for a time and when ready, move on to the heifer barn. Our days are busy with feeding animals, cleaning pens, ensuring animal health, and planting and harvesting 900 + acres of corn and alfalfa in the spring, summer and fall.
