I had a birthday a couple weeks ago. Clicked 9 years on the recovery train. January 6th 2015 is my sobriety date. My life is pretty awesome. I got a job, a house, a family, and respect. All of those things I can lose if I don’t do the work. Thanks for all the love and support! Here’s to another 24 hours!

Winter finally decided to show up this past week in Utah. Played it safe in the low lands due to extreme avalanche danger. Still had a killer time with lots of face shots!.

We went and had lunch with people who are special to us. As my boys grow a little older I get to tell them more and more about my life. We talked about how Charlie was my friend like Shep was theirs. They know about Heaven and how people go there. Thanks for letting us have lunch with ya buddy! Watch over us!

Full circle. I used to show up to high school football games with a pocket full of pain pills back in the day. Now I get to share the message of recovery and support the athletic department. Honored to have our banner hung up at Davis High! Go Darts!

We are lucky if we get to wake up tomorrow. This man lived out his life until it was time to go home. We got a chance to add to this world or take from it everyday. I try to add as much as possible. I still take a lot. Days like this remind me to smile more, stress less, love harder and always remember people matter. Things don’t.

About 5 years ago we bought a house up here in Mtn Green Utah. Snowbasin is on the mountain in the distance. This is one of the trails I’m running that wraps through and around the development we live in. This year is exceptionally green with all the snow and water we’ve had.
GRATEFUL is the word that comes to mind.
Under 9 years ago I was struggling to even get out of bed each day and spending all the money I had on pills and alcohol. I was dying more and more every day.
Last night I got to roast marshmallows with my 5 year old and his best buddy next door in our fire pit out back. I sat there just amazed and thankful for the life I have today. I have a family, a home and friends.
What wild ride. Recovery is possible.

I do a lot of cool stuff in recovery. Like follow a group of crazy bikers over 700 miles across Utah and Arizona. These bikers are all part of the solution. Sober riders. Recovery soldiers. Been on the mend after this 30k a few weeks ago. The knee is swollen but slowly beginning to feel better. It’s been awhile since I’ve been injured. I need to take better care of this body. It’s been through a lot. Getting older sucks. :) but I’ m alive! I’ll keep living that life!

Oregonian Taylor Spike added his name to the very short list of ultra-endurance athletes to complete a sub-60 hour, 200-mile ultramarathon. For Taylor, running is about life — and life is about submitting to the friction necessary to get uncomfortable. Comfort is hiding after a lousy day at work to bust into a case of beer. Comfortable is overweight. Comfortable is Dilaudid, a buzz, and a couch. There was a time in Taylor’s life when he went through the motions of addiction to cope. "I didn’t have a pill problem, I had a pain problem". Back surgeries and a gut left him uninspired and lethargic.

In the suffering of the long run, he finds his family and his truth. “I was quick to look for the easy out,” according to Taylor, who at the time was trapped in the spiral of routine, but which ultimately spun into a self-destructive path chasing numbness and a false high. When a second surgery was required for his back, he was already walking down that road. Alone. When the second round of therapy and pain management was heaped on his plate, Taylor expected help and accountability. He hoped again to skate through riding the easy out. Life was not gritty, raw, or real.

What he found instead was a heavy dose of self-accountability and a hard look in the mirror. No one offered to do the heavy lifting for him, and he realized that no one could alter the map of his life besides himself. There are prisons we lock ourselves in that we hold the only key to. “We all go through life avoiding confrontation,” he says. Even conflict within ourselves.
