In the Red and Brown Water
Set against the Louisiana bayou, In the Red and Brown Water tells the story of Oya, who is thrust into the murky waters of adulthood and must choose between staying home to take care of her ailing mother and accepting a track scholarship as a way out of poverty. Using West African Yoruba storytelling, Caribbean Santeria mythology, and the writing influences of August Wilson, Tarell Alvin McCraney creates an exciting, funny, and tender story that puts the trials and tribulations of black girlhood and growing up in America center stage. This is one not to be missed.
In the Red and Brown Water runs September 20-25, Tues-Sat 8 p.m., and Sunday 2 p.m, at the Onyx Theater at Kennesaw State University.
