Not all weeds are bad. At least that’s what assistant professor of biology Mario Bretfeld, MSIB alum Eric Duncan, and Field Station manager Michael Blackwell want people to understand. To help shift perceptions, the trio launched the Safeguarding, Education, Propagation, and Applied Research Laboratory (SEPAL) project to get people to understand certain plants can be beneficial. Ultimately, they hope to help safeguard endangered plants and grow native plants such as skullcap and milkweed to support local ecosystems around the South. https://bit.ly/3WihMR8
Congratulations to Dr. Eric Stachura from the Kennesaw State University Department of Mathematics on his recent grant with the Army Research Office! The grant allows Dr. Stachura to research how electromagnetic waves interact with various surfaces more directly with collaborators in Sweden and Greece. He also plans to establish research projects related to this work with students from engineering, physics, and other departments at Kennesaw State University.

Everyone has a unique academic journey at Kennesaw State University, and Sarah Chang is no different. For her, it was about pursuing two interests, biology and music performance, the second she arrived on campus. As she prepares to graduate this month, she looks ahead to her next chapter: pursuing a master’s degree in public health to expand her medical knowledge and ultimately help those in need. 🔗https://bit.ly/4ad3s1d

Captivated by a presentation on the chemistry behind hair dye colors, Lexie Trasher found her way from being a hairdresser to working in Dr. Mohammad Halim’s lab at Kennesaw State University.
Once part of Halim’s lab, Lexie used her existing experience in cosmetic chemistry to create the amino acids involved in ecologically friendly sunscreen. Her project ultimately earned her first place in the undergraduate poster presentation at the Symposium of Student Scholars.
Now, Lexie hopes to take her experience to the next level at an internship this summer with L'Oreal.
