Today we celebrate Juneteenth. In 1863 President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that officially ended slavery in the United States. However it took 2 years for US soldiers to travel throughout the former confederacy to enforce that freedom. June 19th 1865, General Gordon Granger arrives in Texas, representing the last former confederate state holding slaves to liberate them. This day represents America’s first attempt to live up to the words, “All men are created equal”.
