Our history . . the Church.

Hugh Latimer was one of the great preachers of English history. He described himself, “as obstinate a papist as any there was in England.” That was until he met a man named Thomas Bilney in Cambridge. Bilney was called, “Little Bilney,” because he was a very small man, yet a man of great conviction and courage. One day, Latimer was preaching a very anti-Protestant sermon, attacking Philip Melanchthon and Lutheran doctrine. Bilney, who was a lovable and gentle sort of person, approached Latimer after the sermon and asked Latimer to hear his confession. Latimer the priest heard Bilney’s confession, but what he really heard was the Gospel within that confession. Bilney not only confessed his sins, but he also confessed God’s grace, the truth of the Bible, and the justification by faith that Luther had been teaching. Bilney confessed everything Latimer needed to know to be saved. So the confessor heard the Gospel and never forgot it.

Latimer heard and learned more that day than he had learned in many years. Latimer said, “From that time forward I began to smell the Word of God and forsook the schoolmasters and such fooleries.” Latimer soon became the best-known preacher of the English Reformation. One of the most famous sermons in English history is Latimer’s “Sermon on the Plowers.”

Latimer was sadly burned at the stake in 1555 under the Catholic Queen Mary I, at Oxford. He preached until the very end. His last sermon was to Nicholas Ridley, a fellow Protestant who was to be burned alongside him. Latimer could tell, as the time got close for the awful experience of dying in the flames, that Ridley was losing heart. Who would not lose heart at a time like that? Latimer encouraged him by saying, “Be of good Comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man. We shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England as I trust shall never be put out!” The candle still burns bright today!

Johann Sebastian Bach was born in 1685, and was a German Lutheran. He served for a time as a court musician, but he believed that God was calling him to devote his life to church music. Some have even called him, “the fifth evangelist.” That means Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Bach. He is known as such because he wrote some 300 cantatas, musical sermons with the text usually taken from the Scripture lesson for the day. The minister would prepare the sermon with that text, and Bach would write the music. So much of the great musical heritage that comes from Bach comes from his week-by-week production of these cantatas.

Bach was also a Bible student and a competent theologian. We know that his library contained many volumes of Luther, and also the writings of the Pietists. His Bible is at Concordia Seminary in Saint Louis—at least, one of his Bibles. It is interesting to have a look at the Bible that Bach owned. It is a version of Martin Luther’s great translation, and it has notes in it with Bach annotating the Bible in various places in the margins, especially the book of Chronicles, where there is a great deal of information about music. Bach had written his comments in the margin, drawing from Chronicles and from other places in the Bible about what he believed church music that is God-pleasing looked like.

Bach was certainly a Christian who knew his Bible, and his music flowed out of his theological Orthodoxy, biblical knowledge, and out of his own personal piety. Often on his musical manuscripts he would place the letters SDG (soli deo gloria), “to the glory of God alone.” Or, sometimes, you will find the letters JJ (Jesu juva), “Jesus help me” as he worked on these great musical contributions to the history of the church.

Bach died on July 28, 1750. His unfinished chorale, “To before the throne, my God, I stand,” which was being dictated because of his failing eyesight, reveals that Bach was genuine to the last bar. This closing verse was on his lips: “Grant that my end may worthy be / And that I wake Thy face to see.”
