Beyond ABA
Welcome to Beyond ABA! Helping children with autism and related developmental disorders, and their
What is ABA, and how can it help your child?
1. ABA is a scientific approach to aid in the understanding of different behaviors. It is used in schools, marketing, environmental studies, forensics, sports, and other fields.
2. ABA uses positive reinforcement strategies to teach socially significant skills. Reinforcement can be different for each person. Mine is iced coffee, but a child’s might be a favorite bead to put on a string, a high five, a small toy or token, and the list can go on and on.
3. ABA can include prompting to aid in client participation with a clinician. Prompting in ABA includes verbal, gestural, visual, model, or gentle guidance (hand over hand). Clinicians will always use the least restrictive, most effective prompt with their clients. As the client increases in independence, prompting fades out.
4. ABA clinicians understand that ALL behavior is a form of communication. Behaviors are displayed to meet some kind of need. This behavior can look different for everyone. Screams can communicate happiness or fear. Close eye contact can mean deep love or questioning. In ABA, we appreciate all types of communication.
I’ve been with Beyond ABA for eight years now, and during that time, I have been continuously encouraged to share my ideas and viewpoints to help my clients develop. In addition, I’ve been incredibly supported in taking on new challenges. This has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. With the encouragement of my colleagues, I chose to pursue my Master’s Degree in Applied Behavior Analysis and expand my skills within the company. The supportive and inclusive environment here aligns with my values and makes me truly appreciate the company I’m a part of.

When you find out your child has autism, what do you do next?
1. Start educating yourself about autism, but remember that each child is different.
2. Evaluate your home environment to meet the needs of your child.
3. Seek professional therapeutic services through a local ABA center.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to aid in the understanding of different behaviors. Effective ABA will increase socially significant appropriate behaviors while subsequently decreasing behaviors that would interfere with a person’s quality of life. ABA focuses on changing environmental variables to change the expected behavioral outcomes.

Social skills can be incredibly challenging for children with ASD.
There are 3 primary characteristics of ASD: '
1. Communication—Children may not have the language required to interact with other children, making it harder for them to engage with others.
2. Deficits in understanding and applying social norms (this could include inabilities to share toys, reading the room (looking for covert social cues in social settings)
3. Stereotyped/repetitive behavior. This may look unfamiliar and may be hard for peers to understand. The child may only engage in rigid or scripted play and may experience difficulties in varying play to accommodate others.

Parent Question: What should I do now? I think my daughter is autistic.
Take a deep breath, momma. It's going to be ok.
Contact your pediatrician or primary care provider ASAP to discuss your concerns. Often, there is a long waitlist for a formal diagnosis and a longer waitlist to begin services. List your concerns and write down as many details about your child's behavior as possible. You could also record any behaviors you want to share with your doctor.
