I love teaching in various forms. I've taught preschool, was a parent educator, headstart and now soapmaking.
Let me tell you something. I have never had more eyes rolled at me then when we are set up for a soapmaking class and I hault a student for not wearing the proper protective gear. I will wait or reschedule and here's why.
Using sodium hydroxide in the beginning stages means working with a caustic material. Only for a bit. But during that time, it is imperative that you are safe and protected
Making soap is like swimming in the ocean. Except for the fact I'm not going swimming in the ocean :). However the experience is fun and exciting. At the same time you must respect the fact that without care, it can also be dangerous.
The picture below is from last week. I was making a large batch and before I reached emulsification some of the batter splashed my gloves. This will happen. I immediately changed gloves and continued working. Not worrying about the pair that got splashed.
This is the end result. So when I say wear your protective wear or I won't proceed with a lesson or consultation without. Imagine what would have happened if this would have been my arm or bare hand. Or my eyes if I wasn't wearing goggles.
So Please ALL makers. No matter how experienced you are. Always take the steps to ensure that not only your products are safe, but you as well.
Ok lecture over. Time to make more soap.
Ps. I'm sure some of you have had accidents in the past. Feel free to share your cautionary tales

Take a peak at this short video as explains the difference.
Good Morning.
I woke up feeling excited.
Here's the kicker, I don't even know why. That's OK, I'll use it to make more soap.

If I asked,
How are you this morning, how would you respond?
All languages welcome :)
Makers!
Listen, take advantage of this heat if you are stuck in it also.
You know those pails of oils you hate digging into?
Place them in the garage or outside let them soften/melt and get to masterbatching.
I save my coconut oil jars and 5lb buckets and premix my oils only. It saves time when making and so much easier when they are soft or melted.
Good time to clean butters that need straining as well.
Happy Monday!
What do you have planned for the week?

Good Day all!
So today I'm am entrepreneur. But that wasn't always the case.
So let's play a round of, What's the strangest job you ever had?
I'll start. Picture this. It's summer time in PA. Somerwhere around 1996. My mother was the manager at a temp service. She calls and says, hey I have a position at the Special Olympics. You want it?
I jump at the job, I don't care about the details. Love supporting the Special Olympics and she knew it. It's in a city quite a ways away, so my stepfather rides with me. He.loved SO baseball. So win win.
I get there, sign in and the person says. Come with me to get dressed. I'm thinking yay a free t-shirt. Noooooooo. Not a free t-shirt.
She hands me a costume. She says, becareful it's hot and heavy so there's a fan in the head(put a pin in this point, I'll circle back)
Now me being 5'1 look at the costume like how in the hades is this going to work.
My jolly stepfather bends over in laughter.
Yall my mom set me up. I was in a 6 ft tall Planters Peanut Costume. Now mind you I'm fit as fiddle at this point in my life. So cool.
Get in the costume, loose my balance, figure out how to make it work. Let's go.
I'm going around handing out peanuts. Poppop is helping me navigate bc the eyes are over my head and all i can see is the ground. Thank God for the fan because that thing was sweltering hot.
There's a break in events and I'm surrounded by adoring participants. All buying in to the idea that I'm a giant peanut.
When all of a sudden a unnecessarily tall participant decides to look down into the eyes.
I hear him say, Hey that's not a peanut, it's a people. he repeats louder and louder. The others join in. He then says hey people get out that peanut.
Remember the fan? They decide to start banging on the peanut to get me out. The fan is wobbling closer and closer to my face. All I can see is what looks like a thousand angry feet and hear my step-dad in the distance howling with laughter. Oh did I neglect to mention I'm on the side of a hill? Yall have any idea how sound echos in a hard plastic costume built for a giant?
Eventually He and a counselor came to my aid and rescued me from the mob.
The true irony of this all, I'm allergic to stinking peanuts!!! Those peanuts were going to take me out one way or another!
So what's the strangest job you ever had?
Yes, i srtill love the Special Olympics. They are even more special now.
Long day Saturday. We can't wait! See you all there.

Our Story
Hazel Whitman, my grandmother, always told me I could do anything I wanted. That when there is something I want to accomplish first, pray to God and second to work diligently (Philippians 4:13). She would always mix things in her house to use on her skin or for her friends and family. Watching her as I grew, the seed was planted.
Hazel’s Soapery, was created to limit the amount of harsh chemicals that were being used in our family. Before a batch of soap is created or a body butter or lip balm made careful consideration is given as to which ingredients will make the best product for you, myself and my family. Meaning you also benefit from the love incorporated into to each product.
Hazel’s Soapery is currently small one person run business that will grow over time and we value each customer. While we do use skin loving ingredients in all our products we are not are medical professionals. With that being said, we do not make any medicinal claims as to the benefits of our products. However, if you should ever have a question regarding which ingredients are used please feel free to send an email to [email protected]
