This is my “office” view from my back porch today while I have paperwork to do.

Hey all you flaggers, TCS’s and anyone else working outside-Please make sure you are fully hydrated so you don’t have to suffer heat sickness during this hot spell. Wear light colored, loose clothing and bandanas. Bandanas can be worn on head, around neck and on wrists. Wet with water and the evaporation will help cool you down.

Working in hot weather can put a Flagger at risk for getting HEAT EXHAUSTION which can lead to HEAT STROKE. Here are some tips to avoid heat illness.

* Stay hydrated, drinking water and sports drinks.

* Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

* Put a cool, wet cloth on your neck.

* Spray yourself with cool water.

* Wear sunscreen and reapply frequently.

* Move into the shade or into an air-conditioned building or vehicle during breaks.

* Know the symptoms of HEAT EXHAUSTION and HEAT STROKE. If you see signs, take immediate action.

Signs of HEAT EXHAUSTION:

* Heavy sweating
* Pale, cool, sweaty skin
* Nausea and vomiting
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Feeling weak

Signs of HEAT STROKE:

* Skin is very warm, even hot to the touch
* Heavy sweating could be present, but in many cases the skin can be red and completely dry
* Confusion and trouble communicating
* Unresponsive
* Seizure

I am a Washington state certified flagging instructor with 31 years experience working in traffic control. Been teaching Flagger classes since 2014. I also teach Traffic Control Supervisor classes for Evergreen Safety Council
