Happy Saturday, everyone! I can't believe summer is almost over (as in kids going back to school, not the weather). Summer is usually a bit slower in the hair world, so I've been keeping busy taking my kids ok local adventures, concerts, swimming, fishing, remodeling our kitchen, and we adopted a new family member.

On top of our 1 dog, 2 cats, and bearded dragon, we have added another dog named Bruno. He's an 8 year old rescue and has fit right in to our family dynamic perfectly. We are also thinking about opening a petting zoo soon with all these animals in our house 🀣.

How has your summer been? Chill and local like ours or traveling??

Have you ever grown out your natural color and then realized that it wasn't really what you wanted?

That's ok! It's not a permanent decision, and by doing a more "lived in" look, you can still have low maintenance, but with the dimension and lightness that you want!

With a color like this, even though it is very light compared to her natural, she'll be able to go around 3-6 months in between appointments with maybe a maintenance toning appointment in between.
Have you been thinking of trying a new color? Or refreshing your current color? Message me to chat, and we can set up a free consultation!

πŸ‘‰Swipe to see the process πŸ‘‰
One of the most common things I hear about vivids is that it's "easy" to do because it just deposits color where you want it. Which is not really true.
Yes, it does just deposit, and yes, it doesn't oxidize, so it should in theroy be the color that you put on top of it, right?
It's not actually true. There is so much color theory that goes into vivids and knowing the color line that you're using and what colors are used to make the tube of color you're going to use.

In this case, because she lifted so many different colors, I needed to use a purple with a blue base to cancel out the orange tones and a purple with a red base to cancel out the blue tones.

The goal here wasn't to be all the exact same shade of purple but to be purple from root to ends, which we definitely achieved!

I personally think it's an absolute CRIME that it took us so long to do red hair on . It is the perfect color on her.

She doesn't live in Michigan and doesn't have a regular stylist where she does live. So I decided to do her whole head with demi permanent colors to give her a seamless growout that fades as it grows.

Her before picture was after all the red we did last time had faded out. Red doesn't always have to be some big huge commitment, just have to have an open mind about what it expect!

Faded red to Ginger Spice.

Red will always be one of my favorite colors to formulate. I always do a custom color formulation for Reds because there are so many deciding factors that go into the level and shade. No Reds are created equal!

Let's talk about πŸ’‘πŸ’‘lightingπŸ’‘πŸ’‘.

1st picture was taken in the doorway of the salon, with the doors propped open with indirect natural light. Taken with pro mode on my Galaxy S22+. This is exactly what this haircolor looks like in person.

2nd picture was taken with the front doors closed under just the light in the salon. Looks much darker and can't see the true blue color.

3rd picture was direct sunlight. The colors just look a little off and too reflective to really get what the color looks like.

Technically, in person, the hair will look like all 3 pictures, depending on the light she's standing in. But the first one gives the best representation of the color. This is why it's so important for us to find the best spot to take pictures!
Also, why is it important to understand that your color will look different outside, in your car, in the salon, in your bathroom. That doesn't mean that it's wrong. it just means that the lighting is different. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk ✌️

Summer has been busy so far in our household. Between a kitchen remodel and me deciding this is the year I get into gardening, I feel like my Instagram has kind of taken the backseat. I'm going to try to change that moving forward.

I wanted to go a shout-out to my sister-in-law for taking the most beautiful family pictures for us. I could not recommend her enough for your family, newborn, milestone, and more!

Are you guys sick of this head of hair yet?? Because I definitely am not, I'll post every time we refresh this beauty blue πŸ’™.

She is literally every vivid hairstylist dream client.

》Uses good shampoo and conditioner.
》Washes in cold water.
》Washes once a week.
》Barely uses heat, and when she does, she uses heat protection.

By following these general rules, her color lasts between appointments and fades evenly, making it much easier to obtain the color she wants.

Have you ever seen a haircolor that makes an eye color pop this much?! Such a complimentary color to her eyes and skin tone, just perfect.

I was able to create this transformation with no bleach and no super high developers, so the integrity of this long mane stayed intact, which was one of the most important things during this appointment.

What do you think? Is this color perfection for her??

**I've posted this on a reel before, but I think it's important to recognize growth and how much hard work and dedication that goes into this industry, that usually goes unnoticed. I think it's fun to go back and see how much things have improved! **

What a difference seven years can make!

The second picture was the first all-over vivid color I had ever done. Not only that, it was the first big color correction I had done since taking 3 years off from doing hair. Everything went wrong with that appointment. She had SO much hair, parts of it turned pink from previous color (that she lied about having in her hair), there was a chemical reaction and her hair started smoking, thankfully not causing any damage. And all that aside, the color didn't turn out great. It was splotchy, not blended, not the color she wanted because I didn't use any color theory while figuring out how to counteract all the colors in her hair.

Fast Forward seven years, and I have taken endless amounts of classes, watched videos, practiced on mannequins and on friends , and turned vivid colors into one of my specialties.

I am forever thankful to be able to grow and learn in this amazing career and for all of you letting me experiment every once in a while πŸ˜‰.

I wish I had taken a before picture of this because it is a PERFECT example of managing your expectations when getting your hair done.

She had bleached her hair herself and then colored over it with a light brown. Her hair had broken quite a bit, but after a year of leaving it alone, she was ready, and more importantly, her hair was ready to be blonde again.
I will always say the integrity of your hair is more important to me than getting your hair platinum in one sitting.
With the help of and very low developer (and a very healthy haircut), we were able to get to a lighter level. Was it as blonde as she initially wanted? No. But her hair is not damaged, it will not break in between appts, and it will be ready to go lighter in about 6 weeks.

We know it's not ideal to get your perfect color in more than one appointment, but wouldn't you rather have hair left on your head? To me, it's not even a question πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

Sometimes, with changing up vivids, you have to decide what color you can have after the hair is lifted. It doesn't always lift evenly, and sometimes, there are some stubborn undertones left.

My best advice when going into an appointment wanting change is definitely to go in with an open mind πŸ˜„.

Would you believe we started with black hair?! (I didn't take a before picture, but the last picture was only 2 months ago.)
It's honestly so hard to predict what will happen when lifting black haircolor, professional, or not. It is a hard color to lift out of the hair. I have found that doing a color remover before any bleach is applied helps tremendously.

The best thing to keep in mind while making a hair transition is that as a hairstylist, my main focus is to make sure your hair stays as healthy as possible and still get your end result. And sometimes that means having a transition color.
In this case, however, we got to the end goal with minimal damage thanks to and lots of time and patience.

Are you looking to add some length and density to your hair with very low maintenance??

K-Tips are a great option! When taken care of properly, they can last in your hair for 3-5 months! You can still keep up on your color and get them trimmed so they don't look scraggly. The only downside is that the hair is not reusable like it is with other extension methods.

This is a full head of 20-inch K-tip extensions.

This whole look was done using demi permanent colors and high-rise bleach.

Is it Fall? No.
Did I do this on Saturday and not in the Fall? Yes.
Does it matter what season it is? No.

I don't know where in the rules it said that you can only do warm colors in the Fall, but I'm a firm believer if you do whatever color you want, no matter the season! (Also, wear your Halloween clothes whenever you see fit πŸŽƒ.

Do you change your haircolor with the season?

When changing vivid haircolor, it is all about color theory. Sometimes you get really lucky, and the color remover takes out everything, and other times, you end up with a yellow-green crayon color.
I went into this correction on myself, knowing I would need to be some shade of red, coming from a blue based green. But that doesn't always mean red is the only option!

Pink, magenta, and most purples are a great option, too, because they have a red base to start.

When wanting to change your vivid haircolor, just be sure to keep an open mind and manage your own expectations. There's only so much we can predict 😁.

I think this is officially the last client that I will need to have come back a different day to take pictures because it was nighttime at 5 pm πŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

This whole copper look was done with demi permanent hair color. Why would I choose demi over permanent? Makes it easier to change later! This client likes to change up her hair color, and blonde is one of the colors she likes to be. If I had used permanent haircolor here, I would have made my job a lot harder in the long run and caused potential unnecessary damage when she wants to change it.

Copper is hard enough to get out of the hair, why make it harder?

This is the number one complaint/question I get ALL the time! There are so many reasons why people lose hair and with there being 7,000 products out there that "grow your hair" it can be so overwhelming to think about, which makes you stress, which then makes your hair fall out more! It's a vicious circle, but I want to help you figure it out!

Check out my third slide for the first questions I always ask first. If you don't think any of those are the culprits, then I highly suggest getting some blood work done. Time can get away from us, and some don't realize it's been years since they've been to a doctor.

My biggest problem with all the prodcuts out there that "make your hair grow" don't actually work if the problem is internal. Most can help grow hair that is already there but not create new hair growth.

I could go on forever about this, honestly. Is this a mini series that some of you would be interested in? I could go in depth with some product suggestions as well as general hair and scalp care. Let me know in the comments or DMs!

Red hair is one of my favorite colors to do, especially a more natural red color.

This client showed me a few inspiration pictures that were pretty different, but with a thorough consultation about goals, maintenance, and overall look, we settled on this one, and I'm obsessed 😍.

Stay tuned next week for when we add some extensions to this beauty to prepare for her wedding! It's going to be so good.

My Mama Bear has been coloring her hair some shade of red for close to 30 years. Up until 2020, she had a pixie cut, so the color that was on her ends was cut off. But for the last 3 years, it's been long, and there have been a couple of box colors put on it. (She lives 2 hours away from me, and I have 2 kids. It's sometimes easier for her to it herself 😬)

In November, she told me she was ready to stop coloring it and wanted to try and go natural. So here's the deal and rules for when you want to grow out your natural color, gray hair or not;

1️⃣ You need to be ok with a good chop. Those ends are holding the most color and aren't doing anything good for you, so say bye-bye. Also, you need to keep up with cutting it at least every 8 weeks until your old color is all gone.

2️⃣ You also need to understand that this is a process, and even if you get to an amazing color in your first appointment (like this one), there is still maintenance until your hair grows completely out. Such as highlights or toners or both, just to keep the color blended.

3️⃣ Have PAITENCE and manage your own expectations. Unfortunately, we can't always predict what your hair is going to do. I told my mom that this wouldn't work the first go around, but it did. We just never know. Also, understand that we are trying to blend the colors to make the grow out at seamless as possible, not 100% match, especially if there is natural gray.

Would you grow out your natural color??

I am a very firm believer in brunettes should NEVER be monochromatic. They need dimension, depth, and movement. Just adding a few different shades of brown makes a huge difference in the overall look.

The real MVPs are the clients that come back a different day for an after pictures because it was too dark to take them the day of their appointment.

Subtle pop of pink that will fade perfectly to blonde. Low maintenance fun 😁.

Would you come back a different day for a free style and so your stylist could get some after pictures?

This fade out is everything you want in a vivid client. Besides it being grown out, the color faded evenly and stayed vibrant for weeks. When you follow the vivid rules, you get the most out of your color.

πŸ’™ Use professional, color safe shampoo.
πŸ’œ Wash in cold water.
πŸ’™ Wash only once or twice a week.
πŸ’œ Minimal heat styling and when using heat, use a heat protectent.

Vivids are definitely more of a high maintenance color, but if you want it bad enough, you can deal with a little cold water πŸ˜‰

What vivid color would you do if you had to pick one?

And she's back! When I first met .ann.h. she was super blonde. We kept that up for a few years, then last Fall, she decided on red, and it is her color, wouldn't you agree?? 😍 (she did go blonde for the Summer)

Have you thought about red but dread the maintenance?? Here are a few tips to get the most out of your red.

πŸ”ΊοΈ Wash in cold water. I know, I know, that's no fun, but consider washing just your hair in the tub or sink and then body shower as hot as you'd like.

πŸ”ΊοΈ Extend your wash day with dry shampoo. Don't have a dry shampoo you like? I'd love to recommend one for you!

πŸ”ΊοΈ Colored conditioner or an at home gloss. I would NEVER recommend coloring your own hair, but when it's for maintenance and keeping your hair bright, I'm all for it. Only if you use what I suggest, though.

πŸ”ΊοΈ And lastly, I can not stress this one enough. You need to use professional grade shampoo and conditioner. With the rising price of everything nowadays, there honestly isn't that big of a price difference between drugstore and professional, so spend the $10-$15 more and get a better product!

I can't wait to do more warm and rich tones with the upcoming seasons changing! πŸ‚πŸ
