Happy Wednesday! I caught this bee activity at dusk last night. They 🐝 are huge fans of the campanula or bellflowers as well. I kept a safe distance and they did their thing. Feel like it was a whole hive of worker bees out there. This is just one of the reasons I don’t spray my plants with chemicals. Just a few of my friends from the garden. I couldn’t do what I do without the help of these little friends. I don’t use pesticides or herbicides on my farm. I do periodically release beneficial insects like lady bugs, minute pirate bugs, green lacewings and others. I also encourage these bugs naturally by trying to keep garden clean up as minimal as I can to provide homes for these bugs over winter. These beneficial bugs help to keep the ecosystem in balance by taking care of the bad bugs that we get like aphids, thrips, etc. For this reason, you might see an occasional hitchhiker or two on our flowers. By not spraying pesticides, it also allows the pollinators to come in and do their thing. Happy mail this week! One of my favorite finds last year was the Chester Copperpot celosia I grew from @pepperharrow_ . I received my seeds this week and I can’t wait to grow these babies in an abundance this year for Fall bouquets. Not only was the color of the celosia beautiful but the foliage itself was stunning and unlike any foliage I’ve grown. The colors were so vibrant and almost irridescent. Just thought I would share some fun facts about Calla lilies: 🌟 Calla stems from the Greek work kallos which means beauty. 🌟 They are not true lilies but come from the same family as caladiums and philodendrons. 🌟 They are native to the modern-day region of South Africa and Malawi. 🌟 It is the national flower of Ethiopia. 🌟 It’s a popular bridal flower as white callas symbolize purity, innocence, rebirth and new beginnings. In Christianity, calla lilies represent resurrection and eternal life and the Virgin Mary is often depicted with them. 🌟 In Roman mythology, the calla lily was associated with Venus, the Goddess of Love and beauty. She saw the calla lily’s beauty as a threat to her own so she is said to have cursed the flower causing its central spadix to form. 🌟 In Greek mythology, Zeus is said to have brought Hercules to nurse from Hera (wife of Zeus) while she slept as he wanted Hercules to have the strength of the gods. Hera awoke and pushed Hercules away causing drops of milk to fly across the sky creating the Milky Way.
