Know your farmer

How long have you been doing this? This is my 11th year at the Kernersville Farmer’s Market
Why do you sell at the farmers' market? It started as a creative way to raise money to help with the kids’ travel sports, but it has evolved into a year-round side business. I also love the friendships that I’ve made with my customers and other vendors at the market. I have some customers who have been there since year one and I value that tremendously.
What products do you offer? Sourdough sandwich bread, muffins, brownies, pickles, salsa, jam, apple butter, and extra produce and flowers from the garden
What’s your specialty? I am the bread lady. A lot of people come to the market specifically for the sourdough bread.
Anything else you want to share? I enjoy talking to people about the benefits of eating locally made and grown products. I strive to use all non-gmo ingredients and seeds. Especially these days, I believe it’s incredibly important to know how your food was raised and what’s in it. I want to feed my family the healthiest food possible. And I want the products I sell to represent that.

Know your farmer

Rocky Branch Century Farms
Jimmy and Joanne Morgan

We and a brother purchased my Grandpa's farm in 1978. We are the fifth generation owners of our farm that has been in our family since the 1850s. In 2012 Jimmy's mom passed, and we acquired it. It has been in our family since the 1840s. Both farms are registered with the North Carilona Department or Agriculture as NC Century Farms.

Joanne and I both grew up helping our families and neighbors on their farms. We grew to***co for over 25 years before raising produce to sell. We had always raised a garden for our own use. We learned much from working on farms long ago, and many of those practices are still used today. Along with some other local farmers we began selling produce in Kernersville years before the current market facility was built.

Why do we do it? First, we like to eat good food! We want to remain active. It is hard work and good exercise that pays off with good food. The circle is completed. We have gotten to know and help many people that shop the farmers market. That is probably the most important reason we choose to be there.

We grow mostly vegetables that we grew in all our years of gardening, from our youth until now. Based upon our experience we grow veggies that we know will produce well with our soil type, and most people will like. We produce most of the same veggies as most all market farmers do. Various varieties of tomatoes, beans, squash, cukes, potatoes, and sweet corn are some choices in the summer months. Leafy greens, cabbage, broccoli, and onions do well in the spring, and turnip greens, kale, and collards in the fall.

Our persimmon items made from native or wild persimmons are a specialty item. Traditionally a fall favorite, persimmons are being used more at all times of the year.

We try to grow the best produce we can, but we also know the limiting factor that controls much of what we do is our boss, Mother Nature. She can be favorable to farmers or destroy our hard work with a freeze, a gust of wind or a 30 second burst of hail.
