Fitness Patron Spotlight: Cooley and Deborah Turner💪

Cooley and Deborah Turner, both 77 years old and married for 52 years, have been active members of the Charles Lathrem Center since March 2024. This energetic couple exemplifies the benefits of staying active in later life.

Their Fitness Routine:
~Attend classes three times a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday
~Participate in Senior Circuit Training, Dance Cardio and Chair Exercise
~Often walk an extra mile on the indoor track after classes

Their Exercise Benefits:
~Deborah: Improved confidence, better sleepand enhanced mood
~Cooley: Better balance, coordination and management of his "shakes"
~Both: Increased strength, flexibility and daily independence

The Turners value the social aspect of their fitness journey, enjoying:
~Interaction with other patrons and certified instructors
~Monthly pizza parties with exercise friends
~A welcoming atmosphere that made them feel at home immediately

Their Message:
Cooley and Deborah encourage others to keep moving, one step at a time. They credit their active lifestyle at the Charles Lathrem Center for maintaining their independence and improving their overall well-being. Rosewood Glass Club will be happening this upcoming Monday, Oct. 7, at Rosewood Arts Center from 6-8 p.m. Come and share your love of glass with experienced glass artist Guustie Alvarado. On Aug. 25, Kettering Arts Council member Thom Meyer led a group of cyclists on a ride to see Kettering’s public art collection with Cycle Kettering! Due to a power outage at the Kettering Recreation Complex, the facility is closing early today (Friday, Sept. 27) at 5 p.m. The Kettering Fitness & Wellness Center is currently still open with power and closes at 8 p.m.

Kettering Fitness Spotlight: Joe Eck💪

Joe Eck, a financial planner and business owner, has been a member of the Kettering Fitness and Wellness Center since 2019. After making significant diet changes in 2021, Joe shifted his focus to weightlifting and muscle building.

Joe appreciates the center's cleanliness and quality equipment, which allow him to concentrate on his training goals. While learning to lift weights has been a humbling process, he's excited about the consistency he's built over the past year.

Looking ahead, Joe aims to continually increase the weight he lifts and maintain a supportive nutrition plan. His journey from weightlifting novice to dedicated strength trainer serves as an inspiration, showing that with the right environment and determination, anyone can work towards their fitness goals!

A concerned caller led our parks manager and two crew leaders to investigate and help an injured goose at Lincoln Park this week. Fortunately, they were able to free our friend from a stray fishing line without further injury or distress. A reminder to please help us and our local wildlife by utilizing our recycle cans or specialty containers for your fishing line.

A big thanks to Barry Sanders, Nick Brahm and Jason Sullivan for their rescue efforts! Their efforts led to one happy goose! 🌟

Rosewood Arts Center had a successful first pottery bowl throw-down with help from our patrons, instructors and staff! People from our ceramics community came together to make hand-crafted bowls to donate for our Annual Soup Bowl Fundraiser at A Rosewood Holiday Arts Festival. We are so thankful for those who participated and donated their time and work!

Reminder: Research Study Ongoing at Gentile Nature Park

A research study is currently taking place at Gentile Nature Park through Saturday, Sept. 28.

Visitors to the park are invited to participate in the study, which aims to gather insights from park visitors on how the park is being utilized by our community. It is being conducted by the KOMPAN Play Institute, in partnership with the Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. The park is located at 915 Peach Orchard Road near the intersection of Peach Orchard and West Avenue off Acorn Drive in Kettering.

What to Expect:
- In-person interviews with adults and children (with guardian permission) during park hours.
- You are also invited to take the survey on your own while at the park. Look for signs with a QR code that will be posted throughout the park.

On Sept. 14, Adventure Reef Water Park went to the dogs - literally! Our furry friends took over the pools for a day of tail-wagging fun. From doggy paddle races to canine diving, it was a howling good time.
