Today marks the 80th anniversary of one of the most pivotal moments in history -
D-Day. On this day in 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, turning the tide of World War II. Let's take a moment to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom and remember the immense significance of their actions. Lest we forget.

The belief is pervasive that there were no soldiers of color on the beaches of France, on one of the most important days of World War II. None of the many films made about D-Day like "Saving Private Ryan" show no Black soldiers storming Omaha Beach. Most history books don’t even mention them.

It is a sore point among many Black veterans.

But they were there, landing under brutal fire early on June 6, 1944. The men of the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion were packed tight with infantry troops aboard small metal boats that motored toward the Normandy coast obscured by smoke and fire. It was a harrowing ride, and even worse when they landed as early as 9 a.m.

They were charged with raising a curtain of hydrogen-filled balloons over the beaches anchored to steel cables. Tucked under the 125-pound gasbags were small bombs the size of a soda can.

Today, it is important that we remember that the more than 1 million African Americans in uniform in WWII were ordered to fight for freedom and democracy abroad, while at home they were mistreated in an Army segregated by race.

In June 2015, President Barack Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to a long-neglected hero of the trenches of France in World War I. Sergeant Henry Johnson made headlines coast to coast after single-handedly fighting off a band of German raiders. He was a member of New York’s 369th Infantry Regiment - the legendary Harlem Hellfighters. At a ceremony at the White House, the President recalled this long-neglected hero. “It is never too late,” he said, “to say thank you.”

VFW Post 9191 Auxiliary be hosting our annual Father's Day Celebration 2024 at 2:30pm. Come celebrate all the great dads out there and enjoy a fantastic program with an even better meal. Always a good time to be had at VFW Post 9191 and we hope to see you there.

VFW Post 9191 wants to wish all mothers a very happy Mother's Day 2024. We all know how special they are to us all. We also celebrated the occasion last weekend after performing Post Officers & Auxiliary Installation with good food and entertainment. Today we also enjoyed a Military Appreciation Month Brunch today hosted by the Auxiliary for the Centex Community.

Hello everyone, here are some upcoming events that VFW Post 9191 will be hosting. Be on the lookout for new and exciting events. The VFW and its Auxiliary host Breakfast every 1st and 3rd Saturday for only $10. Also, 2 June 2024 the Auxiliary will be hosting a "Father's Day" event. Bring Dad, Grandpa and young fathers alike to enjoy a great program.

For the month of April, the focus is Solar Eclipse Safety.

1. Solar Eclipse: In preparation for the upcoming Solar Eclipse on 8 APR 24, the City of Killeen has declared a state of emergency for increased force protection. Expect to see increased traffic control points by military police and Texas state troopers, on and off-post respectively. Due to the influx of visitors, citizens are encouraged to “Text if you can, Call if you must” for 9-1-1 emergency services due to limited bandwidth on cellular networks. It is recommended to forecast your grocery shopping, stock up on fuel, have cash on hand, and avoid roads around planned events. Businesses are expected to be at max capacity as all local hotels have sold out for the weekend. Reminder for those that live on-post that subletting is strictly prohibited. If you are viewing the eclipse, please be sure to have protective eyewear/sunglasses for the event.

VFW Post No. 9191 celebrates Black History Month It was a very full house Sunday afternoon as Post Commander Kevin Williams welcomed over 200 people to celebrate Black History Month together.

Subtle reminder: Benjamin Davis VFW Post 9191 has its 2024 BHM Program today at 2pm at the 3307 Zephyr Rd. Also we have a book signing by John Harris for his book on Mike Tomlin, Pittsburg Steelers Head Coach. Come check out the program and pick up a fascinating read on one of the best head coaches in the NFL. We have a great program planned with representation from all our Divine 9 Black Greek Letter Organizations. Hope to see you there. Accepting memberships as well for all eligible comrades!

Sunday, 25 February 2024 at VFW Post 9191 we are hosting our 2024 BHM Program and will have Author John Harris in the area with his book "TOMLIN - The Soul of a Football Coach" available. So all you Steeler fans and all of the Divine 9 come out and let's have a good time. Starts at 2pm and we look forward to seeing you.
