We have a request for help on identification of this photo from Karen Cartee Ogg.

She said "I know one gentleman in the picture is Glee A Bridges and possibly some brothers. My great grandmother, Wretha was their sister. Any info would be appreciated!"

The KMHM wishes everyone a Happy Halloween!

10/25/2023

It's , Edition!

Home Halloween parties were extremely popular during the first decades of the 20th century, and although the First World War did slow some of the celebrations, it didn't entirely stop them. On October 28, 1917, the Poughkeepsie Eagle published a full-page spread celebrating Halloween. In it, "Hints for the Hallowe'en Lunch" outlined just how locals could celebrate even with voluntary restrictions on meat, butter, white flour, and sugar. The "Jack-o'-Lantern Salad" features inexpensive salt herring and potatoes, the loaf cake features just one cup of wheat flour with brown sugar and raisins for sweetener, and the "Priscilla Pop Corn" sounds very much like caramel corn!

It was on the 11th of October way back in 1890 that the “National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution” was founded. It was a time of intense patriotism, and four ladies got it all started. Those founding ladies were Mary Desha, Mary S Lockwood, Ellen Walworth, & Eugenia Washington. Over the following years, many chapters were founded all over the country. Four of those chapters played significant roles in the preservation of, and monumentation on, the battlefield of Kings Mountain. They were, and are, the Kings Mountain Chapter, the Colonel Frederick Hambright Chapter, the William Gaston Chapter, and the Major William Chronicle Chapter. Although it was the Kings Mountain Centennial Association that led the way by purchasing land and erecting a sizeable monument back in 1880, it was the local Daughters of the American Revolution ladies that carried the torch into the 1930’s when the National Park Service became custodians of the historic site.

Happy Indigenous People’s Day! Our area was fully populated with indigenous people long before our town existed and became known as Kings Mountain. Native Americans have inhabited North America for thousands of years. Today, we honor those people and their culture.

Our Story

Begun by a collecting group of dedicated citizens, our museum found a home in Kings Mountain’s old post office built in 1939. Today our collection includes a wide range of archives and objects related to our city and the people who have called it home. With several changing exhibits a year, there is always something new to see, and special events often mean opening our two historic houses behind the Post Office. We present several educational programs throughout the year, including scholarly lectures, living history events, historic craft demonstrations, and more. Stay up to date with what is happening here, or check out our website! We are dedicated to providing FREE access to this city’s unique history. Hope to see you come in soon!

The Kings Mountain Historical Museum was chartered in 1986 as a non-profit corporation with assistance from former Mayor John Henry Moss and by Mrs. Hazel Fryer, a strong proponent of the idea for a Kings Mountain museum.

At first, the Museum consisted only of storage space in the attic of the old City Hall. As the number of museum objects continued to grow many homes and offices were recruited to store items.

The Board of Directors approached the City about using the old Post Office building, which had been empty for ten years. The City bought the structure from the Federal Government in 1987 when the Post Office moved to its new facility. After several years of hard work by tireless volunteers the building was restored, and the Museum officially opened in the fall of 2000.
