Here are some of the top acne contributors that I have noticed as an esthetician over the years of treating acne! 🩵
1. Pore cloggers! Pore clogging makeup, shampoo/cond./styling products. If you have the best skincare routine free of pore cloggers but are using other products that do contain them, it’s like going one step forward and two steps back!
2. Pillowcases and not washing them frequently enough. I tell clients they need to be washing pillowcases once a week at minimum, more frequently is even better. You have to think of all the skincare, dead skin cells, oil from hair and skin, pet dander, and more being built up on a daily basis!
3. Sugar overload. Getting high sugar Starbucks drinks on a daily basis, having these high caffeine high sugar drinks on empty stomachs first thing in the morning, energy drinks spiking cortisol and more! Does not mix with acne!
4. Whey protein - spikes testosterone which also begins to create more oil production = impactions become more clogged, bacteria feeds on dead skin cells and oil which can be a big contributor to inflamed acne. Biotin in energy drinks and daily supplements cause an overproduction of dead skin cells which the average acne prone individual already deals with.
5. Birth control! Many women today do not even know the name of the birth control they are on, nor whether it is progestin or estrogen dominant. Which is not their fault, because we should be able to rely on our providers to provide us with information on these things, but mostly everything these days, we are on our own to research for answers. Typically estrogen dominant BC is often less associated with exacerbating acne. 🩵

There is nothing more rewarding than clients that trust in you with their skin and see their hard work pay off. 🥹
I LOVE WHAT I DO 🩵
no medications, no harsh topicals ❕❕
My kind of cocktails ✨🍸
products are so versatile and can give the skin even more benefits when paired properly in fun little “cocktails” like these 🩵
make sure to always ask your estie first before cocktailing any skincare so that you can avoid damaging the skin / pairing things that should not be combined!
credit to the last cocktail goes to as I heard it from her first! 🫧
dOuBLe CLeAnSiNg 🫧🫧🫧
IS A MUST! These 2 cleansers are one of my favorite combos ever - especially the barrier balance creamy cleanser with cooler weather coming in a few months!
I recommend to double cleanse in the PM & to perform once cleanse in the AM! PM double cleansing is necessary to effectively remove the “day” such as dirt, oil, sweat, makeup, sunscreen, and more.
It’s super important to make sure you have the right cleansers for your skin type as this can make or break the rest of your routine 🫧 ask an estie for help so that you can start your routine off right 🩵

We’ve come a long way to say the least 😅

acne bootcamp results ✨🩵
it’s without a doubt that the clients we see success with are doing these things:
-checking in bi weekly especially in the beginning few months
-following their routine to a T
-aren’t resistant when we need to make a change to the routine + trust their esthetician
-never run out of their products
-eliminate pore cloggers immediately upon starting acne bootcamp (makeup, shampoo, conditioner, etc.)
-follow lifestyle changes (no whey/biotin/creatine/other triggers /change pillow cases/wash makeup brushes/etc.)
-don’t get influenced on crazy skin trends
-and mostly trust the process & be open to it 🩵🩵
it’s not easy to get clear skin, there is no magic overnight fix, it takes time and patience! if you’re willing to put in the work, then I’m willing to help you get there! 🫶🏼🫶🏼
acne is a major passion of mine & I don’t take it lightly! you have to be dedicated and motivated for this program to work for you! I’ve seen it’s success over and over & you can too! 🥹
Scrubs are amazing when used properly!! The issue with them is they are unfortunately widely misused! 🩵
First thing that we need to cover: NEVER USE A SCRUB ON INFLAMED ACNE LIKE EVER OKAY? 🩵
Ok next thing we need to cover: read the above statement like 10 more times 😂
And finally, what are the benefits of these scrubs specifically / when is it appropriate to use them?
So scrubs are a really great way to get a bit of extra exfoliation, but they are not used as a daily cleanser typically! I often have my clients incorporate them later on into their routine once we have cleared their inflamed acne. This can help their active serum such as Mandelic serum to be able to work a little bit better since we are using a scrub once or twice a week!
It’s like a little boost! ✨
Scrubs CAN be used on NONINFLAMED acne as long as there is not also INFLAMED acne present at the same time! 😊
Face Reality has 3 scrubs!
Acne scrub is the acne wash (which has benzoyl peroxide) but with added cellulose beads to it. I personally prefer this scrub for the back!
Mandelic scrub is the Mandelic cleanser with added cellulose beads! This one can be great for someone also wanting to brighten the skin a bit more + get that little extra boost of exfoliation.
Lastly, the antioxidant scrub is a great option because it’s a bit more gentle than the others! It is ultra gentle cleanser with cellulose beads added, so it does not contain “actives” like the mandelic and acne scrub do! 🩵
*also important to note when using scrubs, you want to pay attention to the pressure you are using! It doesn’t take much pressure for a scrub to work effectively, we just want a little bit of extra exfoliation - but not scrubbing so hard that our skin is red and raw! Be gentle! 🩵*
If you’re skipping your acne med here and there, you are doing your skin a disservice!!
Acne med is crucial to keeping acne under control & when we continuously skip it, we are giving new acne lesions the chance to begin forming under the surface!
Those few days we skipped our acne med, and the lesions that were able to start forming may not surface for 30-90 days later! While you may be trying to pinpoint what you did wrong the week those breakouts happened, you need to think back 30-90 days and what you did then! (Aka skip acne med)
We are actively keeping acne under control & if you aren’t doing the routine that is stopping acne in its tracks, then your skin’s progress may not be where you want it to be 🩵
Trust me, I know how hard it is not to fall for all the viral and trending things we see on the internet! Plus I feel like in today’s society, no matter how beautiful our skin is, we seem to always be looking for the next flaw to find as soon as we “fix” the last one. Seek a good esthetician that will guide you through giving your skin the love it deserves and helps you not to fall into the circle of comparison that we beat ourselves up over. Our main goal at the end of each and every day is to have healthy skin and to not let anyone tell us what our skin “needs” to look like.
The Tik tok viral mask on the left may not be the best option for someone with acne prone skin as it contains Chondrus Crispus Powder, Butyrospermum Parkii Shea Butter, and Potassium Chloride which can also irritate acne + be pore clogging! (Even if you aren’t acne prone, staying away from pore clogging ingredients is still beneficial to anyone as they can make skin appear dull over time)
The hydrinity mask on the left has zero pore cloggers in it and is formulated with high quality ingredients 🫶🏼 acne safe as well! It’s packed with hyaluronic acid giving skin a soft supple feel post use. Hydrated skin automatically appears more plump - this is why it is essential to properly hydrate the skin if you want to reduce fine lines / wrinkles. 💦
I honestly do not ever see these skincare trends until you guys send them to me! I’m so behind on all the trends always 😂 but I honestly think it’s because I have a skincare routine that I trust and love of professional products and my algorithm/fyp never shows me any of these things anymore! ✨
If you are someone who struggles with always wanting to try the next best thing, and may have a hard time sticking with routines, ask an estie for help! It may just be that you haven’t been told what your skin actually needs and will thrive with! When we are constantly trying new skincare products and purchasing all the viral things, this can lead to increased breakouts, damaged barriers, and reactions.
The world of skincare is fun!! But it can also be deceiving! 🩵
❕❕❕
If you love a light makeup look, but hate wearing sunscreen, then Colorscience is for you!!
Drugstore makeup that has spf 15 in foundations is not enough sun protection! And you really aren’t even getting spf 15 from those! Plus you probably aren’t reapplying through the day anyways because your only sun protection is in a foundation! ☀️
Colorscience is spf 50, is lightweight, still gives beautiful coverage, and doesn’t clog pores! ✨
Wear something that is good for your skin 🫶🏼
THE WAIT IS OVER 🩵🩵 INTRODUCING COLORSCIENCE TO AESTHETICS BY TAY ✨
Colorscience is top notch when it comes to sun protection + are completely mineral based ☀️ they have innovative formulas that not only protect from UVA/UVB rays, but their technology also protects from infrared radiation, blue light, pollution, and prevents free radicals!
Not only is colorscience for all ages and skin types, but I have also made sure to select acne safe skus which is a top priority at Aesthetics by Tay!
What we will be carrying:
FLEX - (the most popular!! Tik tok viral and estie approved - unlike a lot of tik tok viral trends 😂) a spf 50 with tone technology that adapts to your skin tone (shades light, medium, tan, and deep)
COLORBALMS - spf 50 balms to protect and hydrate lips, cheeks, and eye lids with a pop of color (shades blush, golden hour, and bronze) 🩵
GLOW- spf 50 hydrating, antioxidant-rich mineral protector features a pearlescent illuminating glow to deliver a healthy, lit-from-within look (so pretty when added to flex or can be used on it’s own!!) ✨
BRONZE- spf 50 natural sun-kissed glow all year long without the damage! Ditch the drunk elephant bronzing drops! (can also be added to flex or used alone) 🤎✨
BARRIER PRO CLEANSER- a cleanser to make removing spf easier! Helps support skin’s microbiome and promotes gentle exfoliation for a softer, smoother skin texture without harsh ingredients. This fragrance-free, non-comedogenic formula lightly lathers and rinses clean without leaving skin feeling stripped. 🫧

CLEAR SKIN PEELS 🩵
we do these babies all year round! 😎
Peels are my number 1 performed treatment bc they target so many concerns! Acne, pigmentation, aging, texture, enlarged pores, and much more 🫶🏼
Peels like these can be done every 2 weeks, or monthly & are great overall maintenance treatments. 🩵
Many clients have said these are what have taken their results to the next level! Paired with a custom home care regimen by me, skin issues are no match for us! 👊🏼💥
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE wash your makeup brushes ✨
Once a month is not enough! I dont recommend using makeup sponges unless you get a new one weekly because they are so much harder to clean properly than a regular makeup brush is!
Brushes and sponges and continuously being built up with dead skin cells, makeup, dust, oil, dirt, bacteria, and more and this is bring transferred onto the skin after you just cleansed and did all of your other skincare. 😭
One a week MINIMUM is how often we need to be washing makeup brushes! 🩵
Sneaky acne triggers you might not be aware of: ENERGY DRINKS!! ⚡️
These often contain biotin, b12, and then obviously caffeine. 🥤
Biotin increases keratin production which can clog pores even more! Remember, acne prone skin is already producing an excess amount of dead skin cells that clog the pore and create acne lesions. Adding biotin on top of this is the perfect recipe for even more breakouts!
B12 has been shown to increase acne bacteria on the skin. We also already know that bacteria is one of the #1 things that has to be addressed in order to clear inflamed acne. If consuming b12, this can make it difficult / take longer to clear! 🩵
Caffeine in these drinks can spike cortisol levels which can make the skin produce more oil!
We now have increased keratin, excess bacteria, and more oil production going on - this is what acne craves and thrives on! Living an acne safe lifestyle is a true key factor in the clearing process & allows your products to work better too. 🫶🏼
She said her skin is the clearest and smoothest it’s been! 🥹 + she mentioned how she doesn’t feel like she has to wear makeup 24/7 now & what an amazing feeling that is! 👏🏽
clients that choose to work with an esthetician are often tired of being on medication for acne + seeking a more holistic approach and that is what we focus on - not needing to rely on medications for clear skin. 🩵
This sweet client was formerly taking spironolactone but not anymore! 🫶🏼
achieved with a regimen + lifestyle changes 🩵 fully virtual - no treatments!
THE #1 SKINCARE PRODUCT ✨✨✨✨
Step 1 with all clients: make sure the skin’s barrier is in a healthy state!!
Pretend on the surface of your skin, there is a little army protecting you from irritants getting it, but they get damaged with hot water, sun exposure, and more - they become weak + injured and can no longer do their job properly, the barrier is down!!! 🚨🚨
I understand eagerness to jump into treatments and home care, but often times we begin to see an aesthetician when our skin may not be in the healthiest state - so your estie can help get you back on track! 🩵
Same goes with acne clients - often we have to spend a couple weeks of no actives in the beginning because clerks may have been using strong actives that have damaged their barrier, we will repair it and then slowly incorporate the right actives in later on! 😊
the more I can fill my brain with SKINFORMATION the better ❕❕
the only subject that I’ve never been able to get enough of 😂 is this what enjoying learning feels like? Bc I never felt that feeling until I became an esthetician lol
school was misery for me - just ask my sister about all the times I had to sit at the kitchen table for hours while my dad tried to help me learn math and the math was not mathing 🙃
I always thought something was wrong with me…but it just wasn’t what I cared about and I have to care about something to be able to learn it well - also nothing wrong with that. Which took me years to learn. You don’t have to be like everyone else 🩵
ask me anything about skin and I can probably tell you the answer (most of the time bc I still have a TON to learn too & I don’t mean this in a braggy way bc I’m only 4 years into being an estie!! Some are 20+ years in) - and there’s a lot of science involved in it too! 🧪👩🔬 truly a skin obsessed ju**ie 🧠
the biggest tip I can give any estie is to be humble when you graduate esthetics school & I don’t mean this in a mean way but you probably won’t learn much in school - the real learning is up to you to do!! Take as many courses, certifications, watch videos, listen to podcasts, anything you can find - DO IT! There’s tons of free education too, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune! 🫶🏼
Stay learning bc that’s something no one can ever take away from you 💕
Let me explain 🫶🏼
Hot water is aging you much more rapidly & it is ruining your skin’s barrier! This can strongly affect acne prone skin also.
Hot showers are one of the worst things we can do for our skin/cleansing at the sink with hot water!
LUKEWARM water is the way to go besties ✨😊
I would arguably say that next to the damage we get from the sun’s rays, daily use of hot water on the skin is top 3 for contributors to increased signs of aging. 👎🏼
Almost always when I suspect a client is using hot water daily and I ask them, they always say yes!! I get it- hot showers feel so good 🥲 but try to slowly ease back on them little by little or quit cold turkey 😂 whatever works for you! 🫶🏼
I do promise you will see a positive change in your skin 😊
4th trade show down in the books! 🩵✈️ here’s to many more! ✨
this weekend was so fun & so fulfilling - not only with education but with relationships & getting to meet new friends + see old friends again too! 🫶🏼
10/10 recommend being an esthetician ✨ and as always slayed with their acne expert event + launched their level 2 acne expert training! Cannot wait to start this as soon as I get home. Level 2 loading…..💻🩵
Safe travels home everyone! ✨
Clients: I can’t wait to start incorporating any new knowledge I gain from level 2 training so that I can continue to improve your experience always!! You are the foundation of everything I do! 🩵🩵
P.S. let’s slay some acne !!!! 💅🏼
Another day, another SLAYYYYYY 💅🏼✨ can I also just say how much I love having your alls before and afters on my feed!! A true community of so many people going through all the same things! 🥹🩵
I am so so glad she trusted me with her skin!! 🥹
She said “I get compliments now!” 🥹🥹🥹🥹 this can be such an emotional thing for anyone who has dealt with acne! 🩵🩵
ZERO MEDS 💊🚫
I would love to help you get clear skin too! Accepting new clients for virtual acne bootcamp! 🩵
one of the most important things!! ✨
The trifecta ✨
Inflamed acne stands no chance with acne med, Mandelic acid, and hydrabalance 🥊💥
How does an inflamed acne lesion occur? Dead skin cells + oil build up in the pore, then bacteria enters the equation which makes an inflamed lesion!
Proper exfoliation + controlling oil and eliminating bacteria are the KEY + lifestyle changes of course 🩵
this trifecta is my fav acne fighting must have’s and does all of the above! ✨
my fav travel hack is always carrying a hypochlorous acid mist with me in my carry on! ✈️
there is all kinds of bacteria on planes/in airports so I like to mist my skin every hour or so to kill bacteria on the surface of my skin! The ultimate acne prone girly tip 🫶🏼
my fav one is from which is available in shop! It’s the best bc it’s an ultra fine mist that doesn’t soak me 🤣 and doesn’t mess up my makeup! It just feels refreshing.
It has so many uses it actually blows my mind tbh…mist makeup brushes with it, use as non trying hand sanitizer, mist your toothbrush, your phone, kiddo’s boo boos, puppy paws & more! 💦
Another magical transformation 🧚🧚
acne fighting duo : Mandelic serum + acne med 🩵
(these aren’t the only two products she is using)
THE fan favorite 🩵 especially this time of year!
Hydrabalance is a gel hydrator that is water based so it can be paired easily with other serums / layered over or under them for extra hydration & reduction of sensitivity to actives.
It also has tons of other benefits like balancing oil, its anti inflammatory properties, antioxidants, and its capability to work well with all skin types - acne prone or not! 💦
think neotrogena hydroboost but better formulation, no added fragrance, and no added dyes! 🫶🏼
ahhh the infamous st ives scrub 🫠
let talk about scrubs in general first! there are 2 types of exfoliation: chemical and physical. Chemical is categorized as things such as Mandelic acid serum, glycolic, etc. while physical is going to be a scrub!
scrubs should never be used on inflamed acne as they can open lesions and spread bacteria - but they are great for non inflamed acne and okay to use once inflamed acne has healed - in that case, a scrub could be used a couple times a week to help your exfoliating serums like Mandelic acid pe*****te better!
(But please always check with your estie first if this is an option they feel you would be okay to do bc it varies case to case ☺️)
NOW the actual 2 scrubs above have major differences!
The st Ives scrub is categorized as DEEP exfoliation, this scrub is harsh and uses large chunks of walnut shell powder that is not consistent - this is way too much for skin on the face and can really impair the barrier quickly. I hear so many say they like this scrub bc they can “feel it working” but you don’t have to feel something scrubbing your skin cells off or feel a product burn for it to be working properly - these are actually key indicators that it is probably too aggressive of a product.
The is amazing and I’m not saying this bc I carry it but because it truly is a well formulated scrub! It uses cellulose beads paired with ultra gentle cleanser that are so tiny and consistent in size for the perfect amount of exfoliation. You can’t really see them in this photo, but they are there & you do feel them! (But not too rough / aggressive of an exfoliation! With scrubs, rubbing them in gently is plenty - you don’t have to rub so hard that your face is red afterwards! 🩵
Hope this helps! Stay exfoliated, safely! 😊
all with love 💕
these can all be annoying/ hard to hear but they are all true! 🫶🏼 remember to give yourself grace, don’t dwell on the challenges and celebrate the wins big and small ☺️
