September is Baby Safety Awareness Month! Today, we're sharing our second tip from Dr. Stephens, focusing on car seat safety and child passenger restraint recommendations:

Secure your child in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat from birth until at least age 2, or as long as possible.

Afterward, once your child weighs over 20 pounds, transition them to a forward-facing car seat, still in the back seat.

Children aged 4-8 and under 4'9" should use a belt-positioning booster seat in the rear seat.

Once your child outgrows the booster, they should remain in the back seat until age 13. Ensure the seat belt fits properly across their shoulders and hips, with their knees bending at the edge.

"To create the safest sleep environment and reduce the risk of SUID (Sudden Unexplained Infant Death), always place your baby on their back to sleep. This position is safest for the first year of life or until they can roll over independently. Keep the crib free of items like pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, crib bumpers, and toys—just a firm mattress and a thin blanket if needed. Yesterday’s ribbon cutting ceremony was extra special for us! When we made plans for building the J. Bryston Wineger, MD, Medical Center which opened in 2006, we always envisioned offering diagnostic services. Yesterday, we celebrated that vision coming to reality!

As the first freestanding outpatient diagnostic center in Southwest Virginia, the community now has access to lower-cost, high-quality diagnostic services closer to home. Special thanks to everyone who came out and helped us celebrate!
