Louie is a U.S. Army Veteran and PVA National Vice President. He enlisted at age seventeen and was a 19 Delta, Armored Reconnaissance Specialist, also known as a Calvary Scout. Scouts assist in reconnaissance, security, cordon/search, and other combat operations. In 1996, one year after a deployment to Port au Prince, Haiti, Mullins was injured in a swimming accident that paralyzed him. He became a PVA member the next year and has served in various leadership roles in his West Virginia chapter and now at the national level.
Always a gifted athlete, Louie enjoys the outdoors. He loves to fish, hunt, trap shoot, and taught himself to shoot a compound bow again after his injury.
Louie looks forward to making life better for paralyzed Veterans and all people with disabilities. Louie says, “I owe everything I have to what this organization did the 50 years before I became a member and in the years since. Outside of all we do nationally, the single greatest thing we do is provide a supportive community. It is powerful when you realize you’re not alone, and you have men and women you can talk to who understand.”

Meet Jose, U.S. Army Veteran:
Jose, a resident of Riceville, TN with a deep pride in his country, joined ROTC in high school and enlisted in 1977, serving 21 years. His service took him across Europe, fulfilling his dream of touring the continent as he was traveled through England, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Holland, and France. He suffered a significant back injury during Desert Storm, leading to four slipped discs.
After the military he worked as an auto advisor for a credit union and then built and maintained cell towers. He had hoped to transition into nursing, but potential employers were wary of hiring him due to his injury. And then, he became paralyzed: his blood pressure bottomed out while he was hunting and he fell off a deer stand. He emphasizes the importance of a positive attitude after injury: “Go ahead and grieve, but don’t let it consume you. This is just the beginning of another phase of your life.”
His wife and children are a strong support system, and Jose assists at home by doing laundry and helping with the cooking. He wants other Veterans to know that they should seek out the services and support PVA offers. “PVA is an awesome organization. They help us have a life and some stability.”

Meet Rodney, U.S. Air Force Veteran:
U.S. Air Force Veteran and PVA member Rodney was a jet engine mechanic and enjoyed traveling while in the service, visiting places such as Hawaii, Canada, Panama, and Japan. Over twenty years ago while visiting friends out of state, he was hit by a stray bullet which left him a paraplegic. He felt lost and alone just after his injury, wondering how he would be able to take care of himself. He was introduced to PVA during rehab, and learned about all the ways the organization could help him focus on his future.
PVA helped him with an educational grant so he could attend Trevecca Nazarene University) for IT, and he was introduced to adaptive sports and played in Nashville for the National Wheelcats. Now living outside of Knoxville, Rodney makes ceramic molds for aircraft engines and keeps his body strong by staying active in the gym and with adaptive sports and fishing. “PVA takes very good care of Veterans. They make our life much easier, making sure we have the things we need.” His advice to others with a disability is to keep pushing harder. “Life is still beautiful – get busy and get to living!”
