It's been far too long since I've posted any eye-candy, so how about this 32 ct. tourmaline beauty? This big fella was cut and sold a while back, but I realize I never shared this photo that I took of this very special piece. Today I got away from the show craziness for a bit and made my way up into the Catalina Mountains for a drive and a day hike. I try to make it up here at least once per Tucson trip. If you have the free time and are able, I would highly recommend it!

And now for something completely different! Not something to facet, but I just had to share these beauties. These are called trapiche emeralds, characterized by the 6-rayed star pattern that they show. These are polished crystal slices, lightly domed and perfect for jewelry as is. These are the best color ones I've seen at the show so far! Very reasonably priced too. HOLIDAY SPECIAL number 4! The sapphire posted yesterday went to a new home very quickly, so it's time for another special! Check out this absolutely massive spessartite garnet, weighing 4.97 ct. and measuring a whopping 10.09 mm in diameter. Spessartite garnet can run the gamut from "ho hum" to "holy moly!" This piece is definitely the latter variety. From Nigeria, this one has that intense orange color that is so highly sought after. Unfortunately, it also has a large feather that extends about half-way across the stone. It does not present a durability issue, but as it is a large inclusion, the price has been dramatically reduced to reflect that. However, as you can see in the video, the lucky orientation of the feather (aligned radially from center to outside) causes it to blend in quite well! So while I've graded it as moderately included, it faces up as a cleaner stone IMO. At over 10 mm in diameter, this is an opportunity to purchase a statement piece of spessartite for substantially less than what it would cost if completely clean. HOLIDAY SPECIAL #3! Check out this really sweet and unusual color sapphire from Madagascar. Weighing in at 1.41 ct. and measuring 6.94 x 5.52 mm, it is the perfect size for a ring or even a pendant. It shifts from a really bright slightly orangy-yellow in indoor lighting to a decidedly yellow color in natural lighting. Very clean, with some microscopic "dust" inclusions (microscopic apatite crystals) that are difficult if not impossible to see in normal viewing. See video for reference. Many people aren't aware that some of the finest sapphires in the world come from right here in the USA! Montana has several different deposits of sapphire, each with a somewhat unique character and range of colors. One of my absolute favorite Montana sapphire sources is Rock Creek, where this bluegreen beauty is from. I love the delicate greenish-blue of this one. It is also extremely-clean, with the only inclusions to speak of being a shimmer of silk due to its unheated state. As with all Montana sapphires, this one shifts from a brighter greenish-blue to a more subdued, steely color in indoor lighting. Video will follow in the comments

This is why I love what I do! Getting to be a small part of such a special moment makes my day. Earlier this year, I cut this 1.82 ct. Montana sapphire for a special couple, and I recently received the following about the how the big day went. Congratulations and a lifetime of happiness to you two!

“For approximately the past decade, the Numbi area in the South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been a source of gem-quality tourmaline from alluvial, eluvial and possibly primary deposits.

In addition, artisanal miners there have reportedly produced small amounts of gem-quality morganite."

Here is a gem.... from a little different perspective! This is what a gemstone looks like mid-way through faceting - in this case, a large, beautiful Mahenge garnet. The pavilion has been cut and polished, as well as the girdle. A brass rod called a "dop" is attached to what will become the crown. Notice the "frosted" surface between the dop and the smooth, polished girdle? That is actually the worn surface of the raw crystal itself, just as it came out of the ground! That will eventually be cut away to yield a flawless crown.
