Day #10 of a 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage
YOU ARE THE BOSS
I would argue to say this is probably the most important. Even when you are laying facedown and your eyes are closed, you are the boss. And I must say, I have the best bosses! π
Thank you so much for following along on this series!
Day #9 of a 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage
GRATITUDE
Take a moment to add some positivity to your mind and body. Having a positive outlook can have a tremendous effect on and off the table. Gratitude can impact your well-being, including your serotonin levels. Your brain releases dopamine and serotonin, which are neurotransmitters associated with happiness and well-being. It not only feels good emotionally but also has tangible effects on our brain chemistry.
Day #8 of a 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Communication is an on going processes on and off the table. You are absolutely allowed and encouraged to say that something doesn't feel right, if you want to change your mind during your massage about your goals or focus of treatment. I am here for you, I would much rather you say that it's too deep or doesn't feel productive enough than to be quietly keeping it to yourself. Make the most of your time and comfort!
Day #7 of a 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage.
BLISSING OUT IS OKAY
Your time on the table is your time. Spend it however you see fit. If you want to melt away, go for it! If you want to talk and carry on a conversation, I'm here for you. If you fall asleep, I promise to not saying anything about your snoring. There's a benefit to sleep through a massage. It's your body being in that rest and digest phase, and that is where healing takes place.
Day #6 of a 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage.
LISTEN TO YOUR EMOTIONS:
Massage can sometime result in an emotional release and you may find yourself laughing hysterically or even crying your eyes out. And it's 100% okay! keep open communication with your therapist about your needs. You are in a safe space where your mind and body can release pent-up tension and stress. So know that you are in a supportive environment where your well-being is top priority.
Day #5 of a 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage.
KNOW PAIN, KNOW GAIN
Some areas of the body respond really well to firm, focused pressure but it doesn't mean it needs to hurt. If you are engaging your fight, flight, or freeze response from the discomfort you are experiencing, it's not going to benefit you. Taking things slowly and in layers or even light and gentle can have a greater effect. Know your level of comfort and keep open communication with your therapist.
Day #4 of a 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage
STOP THINKING:
Your massage time is the time to be in the present. Try not to think about your grocery list or the chores that may be waiting. Your table time is an opportunity to quiet your mind, focus, and be here in the now.
Day #3 of a 10 day series on how to receive a massage.
How much clothing to leave on during your massage? It's all up to you! Your comfort level is my highest priority. I want you to be relaxed on the table, and if that means leaving your clothing on or off, I will meet you at your comfort level.
Day #2 of the 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage
LET IT GO!
let go of the tension and let go of the control! You may want to "help" when you receive your massage by lifting your legs or holding your arms when adjusting your draping or holding your limbs during the massage. You are engaging your muscles by "helping" but it's in your benefit to let go of the control, keep your muscles loose, let go of the tension.
Day #1 of the 10 day series on How to Receive a Massage
BREATH:
Focus on your breathing. This helps to turn off that internal monologue, so that you will be more aware of the muscles that you have been holding so tightly and brings awareness back to your body. Breathing with your belly is a great way to encourage deep lymphatic movement, you engage diaphragm and give your intercostal muscles a break.
Give it a try! Breath through your nose for 5 seconds (expand the belly!) , hold for 5 seconds. Slowly exhale out of the mouth for 10 seconds. Repeat.
You all are so fabulous! 350lbs dropped off at ShareNet Food Bank this morning!
