Pop's Tattoo Emporium
Come in and get tattooed!!
so 8 months later... still getting messages asking about tattoos or where we are!! Miranda and Cookie are at Graceland Tattoo in Wappingers Falls, and Dana is at Karma Tattoo in uptown Kingston. Come get tattooed!
Just a reminder that tomorrow is our last day...We thank you all for your friendship and support, and we hope to see you all at Graceland and Karma!

An important note to all of our awesome customers:
We wanted you all to be the first to know that after a lot of thought and careful consideration, Miranda has decided that Pop's Tattoo Emporium will be closing its doors on September 13th. While the last few years have been a blast, and we've met so many incredible people, it's time for us to focus on our true loves--tattooing, art, and family--rather than the day-to-day operation of a busy business.
None of us will be giving up tattooing, and we hope that you'll follow us as we all start new chapters in our careers:
*After the end of her maternity leave in January (you didn't know? Miranda's expecting her second baby in October!), Miranda will be working part-time at Graceland Tattoo Studio in Wappingers Falls.
*Cookie will also be working at Graceland in Wappingers Falls, full-time, starting on October 1st.
*Beginning in October, Dana will be at Karma Tattoo in Uptown Kingston.
If you'd like to fit in a tat at Pop's before September 13th, please stop in to schedule an appointment. If you don't get in before then--and for all your future tattoos--we hope you'll come see us at our new gigs!
Once again, we’d like to thank everyone for your support and friendship through the years. We can’t wait to see (and tattoo) you again soon!
Just a reminder that Saturday is our last day. Can't make it in before then? We're not going far! See below:

Tattoos and the Army: a long and colorful tradition
“Since the start of military action in Afghanistan and Iraq after the 9/11 attacks, more and more servicemembers are getting memorial tattoos. For the many Soldiers today who have lost their friends and comrades, these pieces serve as a silent tribute when words are not enough.” http://www.army.mil/article/27582/
army.mil Tattoos and the military have a long and colorful history. Modern pop culture credits the Navy with introducing the art of tattooing to the United States in the early 1900s, when Sailors returning from distant lands displayed their skin-art souvenirs.
“What’s with the skulls?” While some people associate skulls with death and decay, throughout time and various cultures and religions, the skull has had many meanings—from resurrection to rebellion. Today, skull tattoos (in various styles) are still among the most popular designs. Find out more here: http://www.skullspiration.com/meaning-skull-tattoos/

We'll be around for a few more days before we move on to Graceland Tattoos (Miranda and Cookie)/Karma Tattoos (Dana). If we miss you, we'll see you there!
What words do you live by? (“Face your fears” tattoo by Cookie, soon to be at Graceland Tattoo)

According to some sources, old-school sailors got tattoos to signify different accomplishments, for example: A turtle meant he had crossed the equator, a full-rigged ship symbolized that he had navigated around Cape Horn, and a dragon represented that the sailor had served in China. Bet you can’t guess what’s under this cover-up. Miranda worked her magic!
German immigrant Martin Hildebrandt, who arrived in Boston in 1846, was the first professional tattoo artist in the U.S. He set up shop in NYC and tattooed soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. His daughter, Nora, was considered the first professionally tattooed lady, and she and her 365 tattoos were on display with Barnum & Bailey. The fictional biography she developed for the circus-goers attributes her tattoos to being forcibly tattooed by Indians while held in captivity.

"The universality of tattooing is a curious subject for speculation" - Captain James Cook - 1779
The first known use of the word “tattoo” in writing is in the papers of naturalist Joseph Banks (1743-1820), who sailed with British explorer and Royal Navy captain, Captain Cook. Captain Cook may have brought the word to Europe—prior to that, the Western World called tats “prics” or “marks.”

Painted ladies: why women get tattoos
Ladies: Why did you get tattoos? This great piece features eight “painted ladies” talking about why they decided to get inked: “If skin is a screen, and a woman writes on it, she is telling the world (or even just herself) that her own standards of attractiveness are more important to her than the standards of anyone else who might cross her path. She is taking ownership.” http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2013/dec/13/painted-ladies-why-women-get-tattoos-inked

Stop Touching My Tattoos Without Asking
“When you stare at a tattoo, perhaps you think this is like starting at a work of art in a gallery. It’s not.” Have you ever felt a hand creeping up your leg or brushing back the hair on your neck to get a better look at your ink? http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2013/09/16/tattoo_etiquette_don_t_touch_without_asking.html
slate.com I’m a fairly tattooed guy, but a simple t-shirt hides most of my tattoos. Both of my upper arms, though, are covered with colorful, intricate pieces, and these are only partly obscured by short sleeves. And this is a problem—not because I don’t want people to see this body art;...

Tattoos and sun exposure: a losing combination
Obviously, you want to show them off, but take care of your tats in the sun this summer… http://onmilwaukee.com/living/articles/tattoosandsun.html
onmilwaukee.com At this point, most people know overexposure to the sun is harmful to your skin, but its even tougher on tattoos. Ultraviolet light deeply dulls the vibrancy of the ink colors and makes relatively new tattoos look more like grandpas weathered Navy tat. Local tattoo artists weigh in with their advice…
Mark My Words. Maybe.
“It’s like being pregnant, people would tell me. Your body is a conversation-starter.”
A fantastic piece from the New York Times about the author’s experience in getting—and having—a tattoo that’s meaningful to her, but maybe a little confusing or controversial to other people. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/13/opinion/sunday/mark-my-words-maybe.html?_r=0
nytimes.com The ink on my arm says more complicated things about me than I meant it to.
Some etymologists (those are the dudes who study the origins of words) trace the word "tattoo" back to the Polynesian noun tatau, which means "puncture, mark made on skin." Some say the word also is onomatopoeic (meaning it imitates the sound of the thing it describes), mimicking the tapping sound made by early tattooing implements. Today’s equipment sounds very different, but renaming the “tattoo” after that sound might cause some problems. (Please don’t come in to get buzzed—You can buy us a beer later.)

Do you think people judge you in the workplace because you have tattoos?
According to a survey done last year by Pew Research Center, Tattoo Finder, and Vanishing Tattoo, 36% of Americans between 18-25 years old have at least one tattoo, and 40% of those ages 26-40 have at least one tattoo. Are you surprised that the older bracket has a higher percentage? Why do you think that is? More disposable income? Some other factor?
