Since 2012 she has lived in Kingston, where she is an ongoing Clinic Provider at The O+ Festival, an active member of several mutual aid and wellness circles, an enthusiastic punk show attendee and a published poet. HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a true hero of the Rondout! Life on The Strand has been so much sweeter since Half Moon Rondout Cafe opened their doors, and is the main reason. Pictured are two incredible drinks she whipped up for me a couple weeks ago when I had food poisoning and couldn’t function. A super strong peppermint tea and the most delicious smokey Turkish tea with a splash of lemonade. Kaira knows how to make even the grumpiest grumps feel better and is constantly thinking of new ways to improve both her business and her community. My clients are diverse. Teens and seniors. Cis and Trans, parents and happy singles, heartbroken and deeply joyful, able-bodied and, as of recently, a self-described cyborg. The thing that unites all of us (🙋🏻‍♀️) is Trauma.

Before each session we sit and chat. A physical and mental check-in. “How do you feel in your body? What’s on your mind? What are you struggling with or celebrating right now” etc. and we determine what supports are needed. And there’s always just one purpose—Post-Traumatic Growth.

For years I though PTSD was a mentally-fatal diagnosis. As someone with C-PTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) I was taught my self-work was mere survival in a continually traumatizing world. It sucked. It was hard. I didn’t want to accept defeat. So I searched for an alternative and found scores of studies of folks who overcame extreme trauma and thrived not IN SPITE OF their experiences but BECAUSE OF them.

Post-Traumatic Growth. ✨ There are five steps. This is life-altering, mind-expanding, heart-hugging stuff.

I don’t diagnose my clients. Most of them have a previous diagnosis of PTSD and several coinciding diagnoses. But after a few sessions, my notes start to outline what can only be described as Post-Traumatic Growth. Then the celebration begins. It’s why I do this work. And it’s why I’m still breathing myself.

If you know me you know I have three older sisters. The four of us were privileged to have a healthy Dad who worked at least four jobs at all times, and a Mom who worked full-time, cooked and cleaned and shopped and cared beyond measure to make sure we never lacked a thing. This year my family of 9 agreed on a NO GIFTS policy, so Kingston Reiki + Holistic Arts will be adopting up to four children in their place.

Maybe Christmas gifts seem trivial to you at a time like this. If that’s the case I ask you to remember what it feels like to be a child with no control. A small body with a big mind full of wishes and hopes and a yearly reminder that no one is listening. Every little one who sees what another has and wonders why they have not… these moments leave marks. These marks fester and spread inside our bodies, darken our spirits. This is the making of depression, body shame, envy and embarrassment that turns violent, hopelessness.

Until we reach a place where kindness and compassion are crucial parts of curriculum, we can all do better. And until we dismantle the toxic manic-commercialism and materialistic frenzy that corporations assault us with every October-December, our children will also fall victim to the promises of capitalism…

So. If you find yourself with an extra $20 this month, you can make a lasting impact. You can be the reason one person in Ulster County ends 2022 with hope. Or three people or four. ⚡️M told me his life changed the moment he picked up my business card. After Session One he booked weekly sessions ad infinitum. He considers them a “sacred gift to himself.”

⚡️P and I went deep and realized she experiences natural and genuine joy when she bakes—something she hadn’t tried in 12 years. After Session One she spent the week baking up a storm, and was able to enjoy a beautifully relaxing getaway with her husband. Her constant anxiety was gone.

⚡️R came to Session Two wearing red lipstick! She said she finally felt like her fiery self again. We began work clearing her chakras and she shared that our work together had already propelled her further than psychotherapy had in three months.

⚡️H came in with intense shoulder and knee pain, and left “walking on air!” She messaged me the next morning to say her pain was gone and she felt “lighter” than ever. (We had worked on releasing shame and insecurities around her weight.)
