Happy Summer!
As summer moves in, so does the incidence of burns. In fact, over 1 million people per year in the United States seek medical care for burns. Whether an accident roasting marshmallows or too much sun, burns can put a damper on any celebration. Interestingly, the most common form of burns in children is a scald burn, and in adults, flame injury!

Fortunately, Emergency One is here to help! We can handle minor first and second-degree burns. Too much sun or burns that are caused by steam, liquids, hot metals, or flames may all be treated at Emergency One.

When should you seek care? First-degree burns are usually treated with home care, however, if it is very painful, you might want to have the professionals check it out. We can help reduce the pain, clean the affected area and check for infection.

Ticks are inevitable in the Hudson Valley. You can still enjoy the outdoors by taking these precautions and reduce your chance of getting tick bites:

1. Avoid wooded and bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.
2. Walk in the center of the trails.
3. Use a repellent containing 20% or more DEET.
4. Wear long pants and long sleeves.
5. Use a repellent with Permethrin on clothing and gear.
6. Conduct a full-body tick check, particularly under the arms, in and around ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs around the waist, and especially in the hair.
7. Take a bath or shower within two hours after coming indoors.
8. Examine gear and pets.
9. Tumble dry clothes on high heat for an hour to kill the remaining ticks.

With these simple procedures, you should be able to enjoy a fun, safe Spring and Summer.

If you experience a tick bite, our providers at Emergency One Urgent Care can diagnose and treat and get you back out enjoying the summer. Get in line, online at www.eoneurgentcare.com

The continuing trend of increasing severity of tick season will once again haunt us this year.

The good news is, that patients treated with appropriate antibiotics in the early stages of Lyme disease usually recover rapidly and completely. One of the most common signs of a tick bite is a "target" like rash, concentric circles radiating from the point of contact. If you discover this type of rash, see your physician immediately.

It is important to initiate antibiotic treatment in the early stages to reduce the chance of developing recurring symptoms. Approximately 10-20% of patients may experience persistent symptoms. In those patients, continued antibiotic treatment may not ameliorate the symptoms, but they should gradually go away over time.

With a healthy dose of tick prevention and a vigilant post-outdoors inspection, you can minimize your chance of tick bites. If you suspect that you may have been bitten, visit us here at Emergency One, our providers are skilled in diagnosing and identifying tick-borne illnesses.

Excited about the Total Solar Eclipse?

Here are some tips to enjoy safely:

Never look directly at the sun without certified solar viewing glasses. Regular sunglasses will not protect your eyes. Even a few seconds of viewing the sun during an eclipse can temporarily or permanently burn the macula which is part of the retina. Once retina tissue is destroyed, it cannot regenerate.

Supervise children closely during the eclipse.

Use Eclipse glasses with ISO 12312-2 certification.

Watch indirectly if you don't have glasses. Create a pinhole projector with 2 pieces of cardboard. Make a pinhole in a piece of cardboard, hold it in front of the sun, with your back to the sun, hold a second piece of cardboard and focus the event on to that cardboard and you can watch the moon cross in front of the sun.

Be careful if filming with a smartphone. The cameras could be damaged if left recording for a long period. Typically, a quick photo may not damage the phone, similar to a sunset picture. Keep in mind, that smartphones were never designed to do sun photography, and the result will be grainy with hardly any resolution at all.

Most importantly, have fun and be safe with this awesome solar event that is very rare in most people's lives.

Daylight Savings Time (DST) is back! March 10th at 2:00 a.m. we "SPRING FORWARD!"

Believe it or not, research has shown that there is an increase in heart attacks following the change to DST! Sleep deprivation, your circadian clock, and even immune function come into play when considering reasons that a simple one-hour time change can alter your health.

A little exercise will help you adjust to the change more quickly. Sunshine and a healthy eating pattern won’t hurt either.

However, the truth is, most people don’t have physiological issues with the time change. It’s in our head. To counter the change, you must change your mind set. Think of it as additional quality time.

Daylight Saving Time is a promise of more time to enjoy life. No more coming home in the dark, It’s the chance to get outside and move around after dinner. Turn off the TV and embrace the extra daylight. Life is too short.
