Be aware! Are you expecting a package? Is the vehicle this person arrived in a personal vehicle? Does there appear to be a driver waiting in the vehicle? Is the “delivey person” wearing a uniform? These are just a few things you should pay attention to. If in doubt, do NOT answer the door, get the license plate number and call the police.

The weather is going to be warming up before long and we will be adding our outside classes back. Be sure to check back so you can learn how to defend yourself and build skills that can help you fight back against a potential kidnapper.
I always enjoy teaching self defense, especially to women and children using the COBRA Self Defense mindset. The bad guy has the time, the place and the method of attack all picked out, but he needs a target, and that could be you! However, you have awareness skills and when that alarm goes off, you know to take action. So, so proud of when people take the time to invest in learning life skills that can increase their chances of survival, should they encounter a potentially violent situation. Congratulations to these ladies from Truman’s Baptist Student Union who did just that tonight. A 90 minute class, was a great introduction to knowing they have what it takes to fight back.
Here is our 6th tip for holiday safety. Keep these things in mind if you are traveling far away, and even if you’re staying home. They can definitely be applied year round no matter where you are, it’s just that the holidays bring more opportunity for criminals. Awareness is key.
As travels begin in just days for so many, it’s even more important to keep an eye out for yourselves and others. Things can happen fast, so eyes open and be aware. Here is tip #5 of 6. Please share this information with those around you.
COBRA Self Defense staff hopes you’re having a good day. If your busy out and about, please keep these things in mind and share these tips with others. Stay warm and be safe. (Holiday Safety Tip 4/5)
Tip #3/6 We’re half way there…
Be prepared by planning ahead, not only what to buy as gifts, but how to break down large packaging material after the holidays and not leave any hints for thieves to pick up on.

2. In store & On line shopping: Hackers and identity thieves are working over time during the holidays at stealing what they can from you. When shopping on line be sure your computer has an activated security system. Close out all windows before you shop and log out of every website you shop at. Your account and personal info should not sit in an open browser for any length of time.
In stores always watch who is running your credit card. Card readers are every where from gas stations to restaurants. Criminals get desperate for money and they will step up their attempts to make a quick buck.
It happens as fast as a bar tender or store clerk walking off to “run your card” and they pull out a card reader and capture your information.
The holidays are right around the corner. You’ve most likely made your plans and the excitement is in the air. The thing is, criminals have been planning as well and they are looking for a soft target. Could that be you? For the next ten days, let’s talk about holiday safety and what you can do to stay ahead. Here’s tip #1:
COBRA-DEFENSE : Holiday Safety & Awareness
1. Leaving Town: Many people now a days post their out of town plans on social media (better to NOT let everyone know beforehand when and where you’ll be going, because of all the people on our “friends” list, do we know them well enough or are we actually telling strangers when we’ll be leaving our homes)? Nothing wrong my with being active on social media, however to prevent break ins / burglaries you should consider the following:
* Leave a front and rear light in your house on the entire time. This is a small fee for security.
*Leave a car in the driveway or ask a neighbor to park one in your driveway
* Invest in small signs that say “beware of dog “and “premises under video surveillance” place by the front and rear of the property.
***Keep in mind the “perception” that the house is occupied is real for the criminal.
These are just a few small actions to take that can go a long ways in prevention. How many do you have in place already?
Check back tomorrow for tip #2.

Local youth learn how to protect themselves from potential predators No matter how safe you are, no matter how careful you are, you need to be prepared for any situation.
Every life counts and I’m so glad these young ladies stepped out of their comfort zone to get the training that can save their lives. If they had just one takeaway, that makes all the difference in saving a life. They were introduced to the mindset of the bad guy, the formula he uses to target them and some things they can do to disrupt his plan. Stay safe ladies and always keep your awareness up. Watch our story on KTVO tonight at 10:00.
