FROZEN CORN TREATS...for chickens!!! Or healthier, use peas, berries, etc.
1. Prepare the Mold: Fill a donut-shaped mold with corn kernels.
2. Add Water: Pour water into the mold, covering the corn kernels.
3. Freeze: Place the mold in the freezer until the water is completely frozen.
4. Serve: Once frozen, pop the corn treats out of the mold and give them to the chickens. They will enjoy pecking at the refreshing, icy treat!

"In the Autumn I gathered all my
sorrows and buried them in my
garden.
And when April returned and
Spring came to wed the Earth,
there grew in my garden beautiful
flowers unlike all other flowers.
And my neighbors came to behold
them, and they all said to me:
“When Autumn comes again,
at seeding time, will you not
give us of the seeds of these
flowers that we may have them
in our gardens?”

The ultimate sustainable packaging! We need more of this!
Vendors in Asia have come up with alternative packaging to eliminate the use of plastics by using baskets made from coconut fronds & banana leaf packaging.
The baskets (made entirely out of coconut fronds) are locally called ‘Sulingkat’. The fruit & veg wrapped in banana leaves also make the agricultural produce last longer since they keep the moisture in while blocking the heat.
In Southeast Asia, more than 75% of the material value of recyclable plastic is lost.
With only 18 to 28% of recyclable plastic recovered & recycled, most plastic packaging waste pollutes the environment, according to studies by the World Bank Group.
Using coconut & banana leaves are a great alternative to plastic as the leaves are large, thick & supple enough to be folded. This method significantly reduces the amount of plastic required.

What an exciting time!!! My excitement grows each time a new seed sprouts. It never gets old. No matter how few, it is always a joy to harvest my produce, no matter how small.
A few weeks I had the privilege of being in community with members and friends of the Down East Coal Ash Social and Environmental Justice organization on a visit to Warrenton NC, the birthplace of Environmental Justice!!!
With temperatures between 85 and 101 degrees Fahrenheit this past week, I find myself planting and transplanting late into the night. I finished planting all these tomatoes at 10 PM tonight!!!
On 6/1, Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack announced a USDA framework to transform the food system. It includes funding increases or new initiatives for 17 programs relating to food production, processing, distribution, and markets. RAFI-USA applauds these investments!
--$300M to support farmers transitioning to organic transition, including technical assistance, farmer-to-farmer mentoring, and direct support through conservation financial assistance.
--In addition to previous funding for meat/poultry processing expansion, up to $100M for workforce development focused on meat/poultry processing.
--Up to $600M for supply chain infrastructure not covered by the meat/poultry processing program, like cold storage, refrigerated trucks, & processing facilities. We know farmers need these investments to scale/strengthen their businesses & local food supply chains.
--A $155M bump for the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) to provide grants and loans to entities that offer healthy food in communities that are underserved by grocery stores and other food retailers
--Increases in important nutrition programs: $50M for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, $40M for produce prescriptions programs, and $25M for improvements to SNAP/EBT technology.
There’s a lot more in the announcement we didn’t cover here! Check it out at https://bit.ly/3x54bAi
In the coming weeks & months, RAFI-USA will dig into the details, share feedback with USDA about implementation, and spread the word as funding application periods open up. Stay tuned!
As we get closer to summer, farmers are encouraged to remember their safety tips when working outside in the sun!
