UT neuroscience graduate starts dance program, instills love of movement in kids Elizabeth Cousins and a few others started the group at UT called "VOLS en Pointe" in Spring 2019. Since then, they have taught dozens of kids to dance.

Honors & Scholars Programs sponsored a day of service Friday, February 12. Community partners included KARM, Odd Fellows Cemetery, Keep Knoxville Beautiful, and IJAMs. Forty-two students and six staff members participated.

We had a new opportunity to partner with the University of Tennessee. We were chosen by 3 students for their class project "Behind the Scenes at Area Nonprofits". We had virtual meetings and they did some work behind the scenes in our virtual spaces (website, social media, and looking for grants.) Family Promise loved working with these students and know they will have success in whatever they pursue!

To celebrate the amazing accomplishments of our Chancellor's Honors Program graduates, Honors & Scholars Programs mailed each one a custom graduation box with their medallions and other gifts. Rachel Sitton sent us a video of her opening her graduation box. Rachel graduates Summa Cum Laude in Social Work and will pursue a Master's in Social Work at UTK. Congratulations, Rachel!
Congratulations to Camryn Sprouse, a 1794 Scholars Showcase award winner! Camryn won 1st place in the Volunteer Spirit pillar for her poster presentation about her work with the FUTURE program. Camryn says the experience has allowed her to be involved on the UTK campus and grow as a Volunteer in her community.
Congratulations to Addison Crawford, a 1794 Scholars Showcase award winner! Addison won 1st place for the Global and Cultural Awareness pillar for her poster presentation about her American Sign Language coursework. Addison says she plans to use her ASL skills in her career as a speech pathologist and will continue to advocate for the Deaf community by raising awareness about commonly held prejudices.
Congratulations to Abdullah Salim, a 1794 Scholars Showcase Award winner! Abdullah won 1st place for the Academic Engagement pillar for his poster presentation about his undergraduate research experience. Abdullah was interested in research early in his academic career at UTK and says, "Coming into college, I wanted to have the ability to apply and delve deeper into the concepts that I was learning in my biology and chemistry courses in a real-world setting." He has been working in Dr. Hazen's microbial ecology lab for the past two years.
Congratulations to Nicholas Crowder, a 1794 Scholars Showcase Award winner! Nicholas won 1st place in Campus Involvement for his poster about the Student Space Technology Association. Nicholas is Treasurer of the SSTA at UTK. As an aerospace engineering student, Nicholas says, "My time with SSTA turned my passion into a viable career path where I can expand my knowledge while doing what I love. Go out and discover your passion! That is when you will gain the most enjoyment in life, when you can learn about and contribute to something greater than yourself."
Congratulations to Savannah Hall, a 1794 Scholars Showcase Award winner! Savannah won 2nd place in the Campus Involvement pillar for her poster about Leading Women of Tomorrow, a UTK chapter of the LWT national organization. Savannah is Vice-President of the chapter and plans to run for President this Fall. Savannah said, "The organization is not simply about pointing out the gender gap in government; it is about empowering women to pursue their dreams and over time, destroy the gap."
Congratulations to Amanda Devine, a 1794 Scholars Showcase Award winner! Amanda won 2nd place for the Global and Cultural Awareness pillar for her poster about her service work with refugees in Thailand. Amanda said her time in Bangkok was a life changing experience and she will continue to look for opportunities to serve others.
Congratulations to Daniel Waggoner, a 1794 Scholars Showcase Award winner! Daniel won 2nd place for the Volunteer Spirit pillar for his poster about his service with Remote Area Medical. Daniel said the experience of working with RAM's Vision Lab allowed him to feel both honor and appreciation to be a part of an organization that shares his core values of compassion, respect, and integrity. He also gained hands-on manufacturing experience that will help him in his future engineering career.
Congratulations to Kalina Scarbrough, a 2020 1794 Scholars Showcase Award winner! Kalina received 2nd place for the Academic Engagement pillar for her poster presentation on her undergraduate research. Kalina has been working with Dr. Anahita Khojandi in Industrial and Systems Engineering on research about stormwater and soil moisture. Kalina says that through this research experience, she has gained a wonderful faculty mentor and knowledge of Python that will increase her internship and co-ops opportunities.
