Two people are dead after a single-engine airplane crashed in Giles County near Pulaski, according to the Giles County Sheriff’s Office and Giles County EMS. The plane took off from Island Home Airport in Knoxville.

But out of the destruction you can see resilience. It’s amazing to see how far Sevier County has come.

Fugitive Sean Williams is in custody. He was found and arrested in Pinellas County, Florida. He’s been on the run for more than a month after escaping transport in Greene County, TN. He was in jail accused of child s*x crimes.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park closing Elkmont and Cades Cove campgrounds and most park roads today in advance of high winds and a red flag warning. There is a Fire Weather Watch in effect from Monday morning until Tuesday morning.

Campgrounds, facilities and roads will remain closed until the high wind and red flag warnings have expired and park rangers can assess roads and facilities.

Hikers should avoid hiking during the high wind warning.

The National Weather Service issued a Fire Weather Watch for the East Tennessee mountains and southwest North Carolina.

Update: As of 6:00 pm Thursday, crews have a containment line dug around the fire. It is 100 percent contained but it will likely still burn for several hours. Dollywood is resuming normal operations.

DO NOT BURN. That's the message from fire departments across the state. Many parts of East Tennessee are considered to be in an "exceptional drought." This is the worst category of drought. The last time this happened was in November of 2016, the same time the devastating Gatlinburg wildfires started.

We've seen several wildfires over the past few weeks, luckily, most of them were contained quickly thanks to the hard work of our firefighting crews but this shows just how quickly things can get out of control. Something as small as a cigarette butt can start a fire so PLEASE be careful.

UPDATE: The fire is 100% contained. At this time, crews say three structures were initially threatened by the brush fire

UPDATE: The EMA director tells me two duplexes are destroyed by fire and other homes and structures are in potential danger. They believe they have a good portion of the fire contained but the steep terrain is making it difficult.

BREAKING: Officials are asking people living on Renegade Mountain in Cumberland County to evacuate.

Emergency crews are working a fire with multiple structures on Renegade Mountain. Please avoid the area.

A temporary shelter for residents is set up at Crab Orchard City Hall and Crab Orchard Christian Church.
