Laine Johnson thought wildlife biology was her calling. That was until the ghosts started haunting. After moving to Durango, Colorado, she became fascinated by the town's Wild West history and paranormal activity. One mysterious dream later, Laine knew she had to open Horsefly History Tours. For those brave enough to sign up, it's a 90-minute excursion filled with haunted hotels, creepy specters and Old West folklore. When asked how running a walking tour differs from studying bears and lions, Laine said, “It’s a little less dangerous, except for the ghosts.”
Hakim Bellamy has a way with words. It’s how he became the inaugural poet laureate of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Passionate and sensitive, his poems speak to the issues of our time and southwestern culture. They have been performed on renowned stages, etched on library walls and featured in anthologies around the world. If you think that’s impressive, wait until you hear about Hakim’s latest writings — legal briefs. The national poetry slam champion is also a first-year law student. The courtroom is his next stage.

“When you're the first at something, it has to be acknowledged because no one told me what roadblocks to look out for.” Those are the words of Richard Antoine White, the first African American to get a D.M. (Doctorate of Music) in tuba performance. He’s also the only full-time male African American professor of tuba in the United States of America. These accomplishments inspire his students at the University of New Mexico®. Every semester they get to study under a pioneer, author and principal tubist of the Santa Fe Symphony and New Mexico Philharmonic. He'll tell them and anyone who will listen, “I am possible. You are possible.”
One shot. No mess-ups. Instant gratification. That’s the life of a professional pinstriper. It’s a long-lost art form that Joseph Leyba has turned into a successful business in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Self-taught, he will pinstripe anything he can get his hands on; lowriders, airplanes, refrigerators, caskets — if you bring it, he’ll lay the paint down. See for yourself at his brick-and-mortar shop, Blast Factory Paintworks. Who knows, Joseph might even show you his vintage car collection.
Lorenzo Pimentel never forced his sons to follow in his footsteps. He told them, "Do what you want. Just be passionate about it." Their response was simple, “We want to build guitars like you.” For over 50 years, they’ve done just that. Pimentel & Sons opened its doors in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1964. Since then, they’ve become world-renowned for making custom handmade guitars. Using aged woods from the Amazon and Africa, the close-knit family builds instruments that speak to a person's dreams, abilities, and experiences. If you have tears in your eyes after playing one of their guitars, they know they’ve done their job.
To say Kevin Biggers has lived life to the full would be an understatement. Even the most accomplished people in life can’t call themselves a retired football player, politician, award-winning florist and master athlete in track & field. But these days, Mr. Biggers is known for something, shall we say, bigger. He’s one of the few Black farmers in Corrales, New Mexico — and he donates 90% of his food to charities. As he puts it, “Growing food for my community is how I serve people now.”

The Axle Contemporary Art Gallery does not have an address. Who needs one when you have four wheels and a tank full of gas? A mobile art space, it travels around Santa Fe, New Mexico, showcasing work from local artists. Portraits, installations, comedy shows, there’s no medium this truck can’t handle. If you just so happen to see it parked around town, do say hello to its founders, Jerry Wellman and Matthew Chase-Daniel.
Norma and Hutch Naranjo have an open-door policy. Anyone can stop by their home in Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico and enjoy a traditional Pueblo meal. It’s a small business they call The
Feasting Place. They started it 22 years ago to teach people about their Indigenous American roots. Once inside, participants get the hands-on thrill of making customary foods like oven bread, tamales, and calabacitas. This includes learning how to use a 16th century horno oven. The final course is a living room sit-down where Norma asks guests about their culture. She’s quite the talk-show host.
Meet Kylah Thompson, the first female conductor in the history of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. She can repair a brake shoe and power up a steam engine without batting an eye. Carving out a path in the male-dominated profession of train conducting? That was a little more challenging. She had to work her way up as a brakeman and fireman before earning her historic position. The little girl who loved trains as a child, is now welcoming the next generation onto hers.
“You don’t see that every day,” says anyone who’s ever walked into PJ’s Fine Bamboo Rods in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The mom-and-pop store uses exotic woods and custom designs to turn bamboo fly rods into fully functional works of art. Just tell owners PJ and Rosanna Dufour the image you would like on your stabilized wood handle, and they'll create the conversation piece of your next fly-fishing trip. If you have the time, you can learn to make one yourself in the back of the shop. Or pop down the street to the San Juan River and cast a line with PJ.
Retired restaurant owner Judy Chiang loves to help people. So when her friends lost their jobs during the pandemic, she bought them food trucks so they could fulfill their dreams of opening their own restaurants. The result was the Pacific Rim Food Truck Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It's a community green space filled with up-and-coming Vietnamese, Japanese, and South American restaurants — many of which are female or minority-run. Like La Cocina de Ana, which serves mouthwatering Paraguayan empanadas. Or Viet Flavor, home to the meanest bánh mì sandwich. Hungry yet?
Teenagers riding bulls 8 times their size? When you dig into the numbers, it’s even more impressive than it sounds.
Leta Andrews is the winningest basketball coach at any level in history. Thousands of words could be spilled about her accomplishments, but sometimes the story is best seen through the memorabilia collected in her five decades as Head Coach.
Leta Andrews coached high school women’s basketball for 52 years and amassed over 1,400 wins in her career – more than any other basketball coach at any level in history. But behind the statistics is her true legacy. An icon in the sport, she saw the game go from 6-on-6 half-court to the 5-on-5 full court version we know today, led generations of young women as both coach and teacher, and was an advocate for women’s rights in the fight for passing Title IX. Basketball legend and even better human being. Here’s to you, Leta.
Dinosaurs roamed what is now the bed of the Paluxy River in Glen Rose, Texas, over 100 million years ago. And to this day, you can still walk a mile in their… footprints, as their tracks have been preserved at the aptly named Dinosaur Valley State Park. Featuring tracks of various theropods and sauropods from the Cretaceous Period, the park has miles of trails, guided tours and can’t-miss models of some of its former inhabitants. What’s your favorite dino?
