We are proud to announce our next round of endorsements for environmental champions across Los Angeles County!

10/10/2022

First and foremost, the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters stands in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities, particularly Black, Indigenous, and Oaxacan communities who were mentioned in the recordings publicly released on October 9, 2022. We denounce the appalling comments made by Los Angeles City Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, and Kevin de León.

We are in full support of Councilmember Mike Bonin and his family and hope they are finding solace from the friends, neighbors, and community members who are rising up and demanding action. The City of Los Angeles must hold Martinez, Cedillo, and de León accountable. As residents of this city and members of the local communities, we are calling for their resignation as a step toward restitution. Apologies are not sufficient in the face of racist, homophobic, and colonial attitudes and language.

Public officials who seek power rather than serving our communities have no place in our government (even if we have seen many unfortunate examples in many places, they are always unacceptable). These perspectives and ways of speaking are postcolonial legacies that need to be removed from politics and the public sphere, in general. Racism and homophobia are still very much embedded in our society as these comments have starkly uncovered. However, we do not have to accept this blatantly racist and homophobic behavior in our elected leaders, especially when their decisions impact real people and reinforce historic inequities. We must decolonize our thinking and actions.

In the face of the climate crisis and numerous threats to community health, we expect leaders who will dismantle structures of oppression and create inclusive and equitable spaces. There is no time for divisiveness. Elected officials who hold these antiquated and hateful beliefs should make way for people who will build connections rather than political boundaries for their personal and/or political benefit.

In light of these recent developments, LALCV officially rescinds its previous endorsements of Nury Martinez and Kevin de León and calls for their resignation.

We stand in unity and embrace our communities' diversity.

Lifelong environmentalist Joan Satt, a beloved friend and LALCV board member for more than 50 years, peacefully passed away in her home in West Hollywood on April 17, 2022.

Joan's environmental journey began in the 1970s after a trip to the unspoiled state of Alaska. She decided that Los Angeles County needed to address what to do with all the trash being left in landfills. To tackle this new field, Joan enrolled in the UCLA Principles of Solid Waste Management program, where she learned about the relatively new field of municipal recycling. Joan was certain that recycling and waste reduction were the easiest ways to involve every resident in the fight to preserve our resources and environment.

In 1990, when the City of Los Angeles opened its first commercial and multi-family recycling office—the Integrated Solid Waste Management Office - Joan signed on.

In 1994, Joan left that job to start a new program in Culver City. There she was able to expand the residential recycling program by implementing a single-stream automated system. Joan also brought recycling to large private facilities in the city, such as Sony Studios.

Following her long success in Culver City, Joan went on to be a Recycling Consultant for the City of West Hollywood for many years.

In addition to her studies at UCLA and a Masters from Stanford University, she became an LEED AP, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Accredited Professional, helping to support sustainability projects in Los Angeles.

Joan was a news ju**ie and deeply passionate about Democratic politics. She spent her entire life supporting progressive candidates across Los Angeles County and the nation.

Preceded in death by her husband Bill, Joan spent her time since retirement with her partner Jim, her children Amy and David, her step-grandchildren and her many friends. She was active in the Rotary Club and with the Brandeis University alumni group in Los Angeles. She loved to entertain, travel (especially to Puerto Vallarta for deep-sea fishing) and attend dinners, parties, and political events. She also started a small business, Rent-a-Granny.

She was a great friend, incredibly funny, and will be sadly missed by the many people who knew and loved her.

LALCV is proud to announce the dual endorsement of Senator Henry Stern and West Hollywood City Councilmember Lindsey Horvath for Los Angeles County Supervisor, District 3! 🍃 🌎 ✨

“Los Angeles County needs leaders who are connected to our communities, who understand our concerns and share our values. Lindsey Horvath has experience not only at the local level – which is critically important in this race — but also the commitment to protecting and preserving our environment throughout Los Angeles County and beyond. We trust that she will do right by our environment and every community across the County.”

“Senator Stern understands why it is so critical to act now on climate and to champion environmental priorities in the legislative process. He has been a leader on key issues that are most important to residents, including wildfire prevention and resiliency, clean air and water, climate change, and housing to address homelessness. He understands that these issues are intersectional and require environmental leadership.”
