LaGrange Railroad Museum
What do you like better the words and letters or pictures?
As trains traverse cities and even countries, it means graffiti names have the potential to be seen by a much bigger audience than just painting in a static location. This level of exposure makes trains the perfect canvas for graffiti writers wanting to be noticed by as many people as possible.
Today was so much fun! If you missed Ernies Lil Engines today- we hope to see you next week

Railroad graffiti became a photography subject almost from its inception. Approached by both railroad enthusiasts and general photographers, it has spawned print publications, exhibitions, websites and extensive online photo-sharing groups. While most of these photographs show entire cars or complete tags.
Graffiti day #5 cars found around LaGrange! Its fun to see what you can find and can you decipher it?
History of Railroad Graffiti
Early forms of railroad graffiti date back to the early 1900s, during the Great Depression. People traveling the country looking for work would catch rides on passing freight trains and mark their presence with chalk drawings on the inside and outside of the cars.
What did we find painted on a freight car? Who knows what cartoon he is from? And what is his name?
A few volunteers at work! They are replacing a section of the DCC track. Continual repair and improvements are the normal in managing the health of these models.
And this is why we LOVE our volunteers!!!
Graffiti is an emotive topic.
Simply by mentioning the word it will elicit responses that range from “vandalism” to “artistic genius” and several degrees in-between. Regardless, it’s undeniable that graffiti is a noticeable part of modern life, and is particularly prevalent on our railroad system. And a large part of railroad history.
We had a busy day at the museum today!
Today, we educated 1st responders on operational and risk scenarios. We do this because education and safety are our core values.

Here we go!! Day 2 of train graffiti found in LaGrange! Whos ready? Its PATRICK!!!
Over the last 30 years, these disparate styles – intimate, rural hobo markings and bold, colorful urban spray-painted vistas – have fused into a contemporary style that seems to draw equally from each tradition. The sides of train cars today run the gamut, from sloppy gang-style tags and idle signatures to line drawings, stenciled imagery, and enormously complex color fields. These markings are meant to be examined in close quarters, or viewed from long distances. They are both widely accessible to anyone who might happen see a train roll by, and completely impenetrable to anyone not knowledgeable of the subculture.
Train graffiti has been around for decades and is still as prevalent today. While some might argue about whether graffiti is vandalism or an artistic wonder, there’s no denying that the art form has become a part of the railroad industry.
