"For the first time since the pandemic, overall prices fell in June, surprising economists and increasing the likelihood of a September interest rate cut," Julia Pollak, ZipRecruiter's chief economist, said in a note shared with Newsweek.

Starting in March 2022, the Federal Reserve hiked rates at their most aggressive pace in decades to bring to a halt soaring inflation that at one point rose to its highest level in 40 years. The move contributed to a jump in borrowing costs across the economy including for home loans. In October, mortgage rates rose to their highest since the turn of the century and have hovered at or near 7 percent over the last few months.

Homeowners with mortgages saw their equity increase by a total of $1.5 trillion year over year during the first quarter of 2024, according to the latest Homeowner Equity Insights report from CoreLogic.

That equates to a collective annual equity gain of about 9.6% for all mortgaged properties, which comprise approximately 62% of all properties in the country. The average homeowner in the United States gained about $28,000 in equity over the past 12 months.
