Eternity in our hearts
The question of suffering is age-old and has been explored by theologians, mystics, stoics and philosophers for millennia, but have you ever wondered why this question is so prevalent across all of humanity?

Perhaps our inability as humans to accept suffering as part of everyday life is because somewhere deep down, we know we shouldn’t. Suffering is not part of God’s original created order. It was never meant to be a part of life. And despite our best efforts, we cannot really, truly accept its place here among us.

To place ‘eternity in the human heart’ is to be given the gift of an eternal perspective; a future where there will be no suffering; a new heaven, and a new earth (Revelation 21:3–4).

A pastor once illustrated the concept of an ‘eternal perspective’ to me by pulling a bundle of wool out of his bag and dropping it to the floor. He then picked up one of the ends, held it between his fingers and said, ‘This millimetre I’m holding at the end of this 50-metre piece of wool represents our life on earth in comparison with what is to come. It’s all about perspective.’

In wrestling with the concept of pain and suffering and walking closely with many who have experienced too much for too long, I have not yet found myself in a place of acceptance, but perhaps I am not meant to. What I have found, however, is the gift of hope in the promises we find in scripture that tell us that one day there will be no more. It is there my soul finds its rest.

Still Standing While Wrestling With the Dark 05/02/2024

Standing in the Light

It’s hard to find joy when life is not enjoyable.

I heard a pastor once say that change only comes when we get sick and tired of ourselves. When the pain of staying the same is too great to bear. That was where I was at. I had spent a lot of time trying to change someone else. But I can’t control others—I can only control myself, and I was sick of living miserable. So, it was time for a change!

I sought wisdom and reorganized my life. I threw things out and cleaned up my eating. I began focusing on creating space in my life to simply rest. I began listing all the things I was grateful for each day. I changed my habits because change comes when we change our habits.

God was doing a new thing in my life!

As I implemented change, change was happening. So, I kept moving forward with change.

My kids’ father had bad seasonal allergies, so we had always kept the windows closed year-round for him. Now that he was gone, my dad came over and helped me put screens in every window of my home. Then we opened the windows and let the fresh breeze flow through the house. It was fabulous! I could hear the birds chirp, the rain hitting the pavement, and the crickets at night. It was all joyful music to our ears. We left those windows open day and night for weeks and we loved it!

See, I am doing a new thing!

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

I am making a way in the wilderness

and streams in the wasteland.

Isaiah 43:19 NIV

God continued to do new things in my life!

I was living loved. I was letting the simple gifts that God gives us each day through his creation be my joy. Life was becoming more enjoyable.

Friend, if something isn’t right in your life, fix it!

Satan wants us to feel trapped and like change will never come. Do not believe his lies. God did this for me, and you have the same God as I do. He will do it for you too if you will daily implement the change that is required for change.

With God’s help we can overcome!

Still Standing While Wrestling With the Dark When life gets hard it is easy to wonder where God is and if he hears our prayers. Let me reassure you, he does! Keep standing in the light! May this Bible reading plan give you the hope you need for another day.

Jesus Teaches Us Kindness

Think back on a time in your life when you were in the position to help someone in need. Did you give them a hand, or did you leave that person to be attended by someone else? In Luke 10, we find an individual who was robbed, beaten, and left for dead. This man was on his way to Jerusalem when he was stripped of all he had. Multiple people passed by him, but only one person stopped to actually care for him. Luke 10:34 (NIV) says, “He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.” This helper is known as The Good Samaritan, who not only stopped in his tracks to bandage this wounded man, but went out of his way to take him where he could be treated further.

This was one of the many parables Jesus taught, and it shows us how we should treat someone in need. After sharing the parable, Jesus asked the listeners who the neighbor was in this story. In Luke 10:37 (NLT) we read their response: “The man replied, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ Then Jesus said, ‘Yes, now go and do the same.’”

Jesus used the Good Samaritan as an example of how we can treat others with kindness. As you go throughout this week, ask the Holy Spirit to help you be mindful of those around you. If you see a need, don’t neglect it, and watch how God can shine His kindness through you!

WWJD When interacting with people who are nothing like us, what would Jesus do? Over the next few days, let’s observe the actions of Jesus and how He always chose to respond to others in love.

The Thin Line Between Fear & Faith 04/12/2024

Day 3: The Rich Young Ruler

Today we’re going to look at a young man we meet briefly through his interaction with Jesus. We don’t know much about him, but what we are told is profound.

This young man came running up to Jesus and knelt down before Him to ask a question. He wanted to know what he needed to do to inherit eternal life. Although this young man was good and had been keeping all of the rules, he left the conversation very sad.

What Jesus told him took him right to that line of faith and fear. Jesus told him to sell all his possessions, give the money to the poor, then he would have treasures in heaven and to follow Him. The young man was sad because he was rich and had a lot of stuff.

Clearly for this man his line was his possessions. For many of us that line is the same. We don’t mind serving God, giving of our time, or trying to follow the rules; just don’t touch our stuff.

Are there material things in your life that are off limits to God? What if God asked you for what matter most to you, would you give it to Him or would you walk away sad?

The Thin Line Between Fear & Faith Sometimes the line between fear and faith is razor thin. A moment, a decision, or a split-second choice can demonstrate whether we are living in fear or acting in faith. In the midst of difficulty, how do we ensure our faith remains in God and no other source? This devotional covers how to remain in...

Draw Near 03/28/2024

Rough Sailing
When God instructed Jonah to go to Nineveh, we read that Jonah, instead, went to Joppa and boarded a ship to Tarshish. Let me tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that the minute you decide to walk away from God and the plan He has for your life, you are going to find plenty of ships going in the wrong direction. The Devil’s Travel Agency has the motto, “We can always make room for one more.” We get on board these ships all the time. One ship we can call “Busyness.” We fill our schedules, make lots of appointments, and engage in all kinds of activities. But if we get on this ship, we do so at the risk of wandering away from where God wants us to be – and not filling our hearts, or the hearts of others, with a sense of God’s presence.

Do you need to repent of the pride of busyness? Our perceived lack of time can be a trap that keeps us from spending quality time in God's presence each day.

Draw Near This 21-day devotional from Second Baptist Church was created to serve as a companion as you celebrate Easter, the Day of days, and draw nearer to Him during this holy season. The selections are from various experiences, anecdotes, and teachings from Dr. Ed Young.

Fight Back 02/29/2024

Another change that must happen in us if we are to fight back victoriously is in the area of giving. Israel serves as a good example for us. What they went through physically, we go through spiritually. Upon leaving Egypt, the people were given valuable gifts, treasures and riches by the Egyptians. That was awesome. But when they entered the promised land, the first thing that God asked His people to do was to give Him the entire city of Jericho and absolutely everything in it. God wanted the first conquest to belong entirely to Him.

The slave mentality is scared of giving; it lives on getting. God wanted to break that poverty way of thinking by teaching His children to exercise the practice of generosity. Poverty runs on fear; provision operates by faith.

It takes faith to give God the entire “city of Jericho.” You do the fighting but keep nothing for yourself. Our carnal mind screams, “That’s not fair!” Greed in us yells, “It’s mine!” Worldliness demands, “I deserve this; I worked so hard for this.” A person who is a slave to Mammon (the false god of greed) freaks out at the thought of extravagant generosity.

You can't be in dominion if you are a slave to your possessions, wealth, and things.

The primary indication that money owns you is your reluctance to obey God with your money. It’s almost like God was trying to break the Israelites away from the slave mentality. He was chipping away at “the victim” thinking. Their mind was being remodeled into thinking like prosperous people. They became generous before they became rich. They were victorious before they won a battle. That’s faith.

In the wilderness, the former slaves used the treasures they brought from Egypt to build a golden calf to worship, but in the promised land, they gave an entire city in worship to the Creator. It’s not about money; it’s all about your mindset. Greed is the slave of fear; generosity is the distinguishing mark of spiritual soldiers. One of the ways dominion works is demonstrated in the way we handle finances. We can’t walk in dominion if we are slaves to the greedy spirit Mammon. Period.

Walking in dominion is more than rebuking the devil. It’s giving your income to the Lord as a way to honor Him. When you give Him your income, you're giving Him of yourself who earned that income.

Fight Back We have many battles yet to fight but we do not fight to achieve victory; we fight from the victory already achieved on the cross. There are certain enemies whom God delivers you from, but there are other enemies He empowers you to have dominion over. Deliverance is what God does in you; dominion is...
