We are in that time of year when the heat is rising and the potential for people forgetting a child or animal in the vehicle increases. This should not have to be said but, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE look in the backseat before you exit your vehicle. Please do not forget a loved one or purposely leave a loved one in the vehicle while you just run into the store. These are needless injuries and deaths and our loved ones deserve more from us. If you happen to see a child in a hot car, take action
Did you know that not all CPR courses are valid certification? With the invention of the internet many companies and organizations have come up with In-House programs that offer instant certification but will only mean loss of money for you. Be cautious of any website that offers a certification card after completing a 100% online-only course. Such cards are not likely to be accepted by state regulatory authorities, and may not meet your employers’ requirements.
If you see the following, be careful;

May is Stop The Bleed month! Below is the story of how the program came to be.
April 2013 (4 months after the Sandy Hook shooting) the American College of Surgeons got together with a group of military, civilian, academic, and federal partners to enhance survivability from mass casualty and active shooter events. They formed recommendations and then met 3 additional times over the next 3 years to for Hartford Consensus I-IV.
Hartford I-IV highlights: (I)LE should be trained in hemorrhage control. THREAT= T-Threat suppression H-Hemorrhage control RE-Rapid Extraction to safety A-Assessment by medical providers T-Transport to definitive care. (II)Public- “Run, Hide, Fight”. EVERYONE should learn hemorrhage control. Emphasized rapid transport to trauma facility. (III) 3 responder levels= Bystander-bleeding control, Professional First Responder- Initial assessment, treatment and rapid transport, Suppress threat (for LE), Trauma Professionals- provide definitive trauma care. Bleeding control kits should be publicly available everywhere(i.e. anywhere an AED is). (IV) Reviewed results and showed training significantly increases willingness to respond and resulted in saving numerous lives. Refined training-recognition of significant bleeding.
Stop the Bleed is a trademark of the Department of Defense and the American College of Surgeons licenses it (why you see many use the term Bleeding Control instead of Stop the Bleed). The ACS Committee on Trauma runs Stop the Bleed courses worldwide and advocates for proper equipping of public spaces with hemorrhage control items like tourniquets and hemostatic gauze. Courses are generally 1 hour long and focus on TQ application and wound packing. Many other organizations offer similar bleeding control courses (B-CON, NAEMT, ACS, STORM, ALERRT).
The idea behind it all is that bleeding control can be a very easy and basic skill that anyone can learn. Properly equipped we can make a difference in mass casualty and active shooter events by treating rather than waiting for help (someone can bleed out in minutes!). Get out there, equip, train and step up if needed!
Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T) The Combat Application Tourniquet is proven to be 100% effective by the U.S. Army’s Institute of Surgical Research and is the official tourniquet of the U.S. Army
