Volunteers Bring Flowers to Law Enforcement GREATER LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The Good Samaritan Project is going around Greater Lafayette showing their appreciation for what local law enforcement does in the community.

Did you know Indiana is home to 42 orchid species, while Hawaii only has 3?

When people think of orchids, they often imagine bright flowers from tropical rainforests, but you don't have to go that far! East Central Indiana boasts a rich variety of native orchids.

Our most common? The nodding lady’s tresses (Spiranthes cernua), with delicate white flowers spiraling around each other. And let's not forget the putty root (Aplectrum hyemale), whose camouflaged flowers and pin-striped leaves are a treasure to spot.

But the real showstoppers are the lady’s slipper orchids. Named for their unique shape, these beauties bloom in May and June. Unfortunately, they're limited to our few remaining acidic wetlands, like bogs and fens.

Protecting these habitats is crucial—without them, we risk losing these natural wonders forever.

So, instead of a tropical trip, why not explore Indiana’s countryside? You might just find something extraordinary.

5. Pay Attention to Humidity Levels
Orchids prefer a warm, humid, and consistent temperature, similar to their natural environment.

“Humidity is crucial for many orchids, especially tropical ones, which prefer 60-80 percent humidity,” says Denyer. “In winter, consider using a humidifier or misting the plants.”

Maintain daytime temperatures around 70-80°F and slightly cooler nighttime temperatures of about 65°F or higher.

4. Get the Lighting Right
Orchids need a lot of sunlight but not direct exposure for long periods.

“Orchids thrive off light but not direct sunlight, so position them in a place with partial shade that still gets sunlight,” advises Wilson. “Water them every 7 to 11 days when the soil starts to dry. Overwatering can damage your plant.”

Denyer agrees, “Place your orchid near an east or south-facing window. Avoid constant direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves. In areas with limited natural light, use supplemental lighting like LED grow lights, positioned 6-12 inches above the plant.”

3. Use Plastic Containers
While orchids may look attractive in decorative containers, these often lack adequate drainage, leading to overwatering and root rot.

“Orchids will eventually need repotting, so using a plastic pot can be beneficial as the roots will be easier to detach,” suggests Denyer. “Orchids prefer to be undisturbed, so try to keep them in their pot as long as possible. When the growing medium starts to break down or the roots creep out, it’s time to repot.”

“Nothing kills an orchid faster than sitting in a water-logged pot. Orchids fare better in drought than in excess moisture. Typically, watering once a week is sufficient.”

2. Sterilize Soil Before Planting Seeds
If you want to grow an orchid from a seed, a crucial step is to sterilize the soil before planting. This ensures the soil has the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.

“Before planting your seeds, sterilize them to help with germination,” advises Craig Wilson, co-founder, director, and in-house gardening expert at Gardeners Dream. “Use a balanced fertilizer like 20-20-20 to provide all the primary nutrients needed for your orchids. After preparing the soil, scatter the seeds in an even, thin layer and gently rake the soil over to cover them.”|

“For planting, choose a porous, loose mix like bark chips or sphagnum moss. Regular multi-purpose soil retains too much moisture, which can cause orchid roots to rot.”

5 Top Tips for Growing Orchids from Expert Florists

1. Choose the Right Type of Orchid and Growing Medium
“If you're new to growing orchids, it’s best to start with a beginner-friendly species,” says David Denyer, Expert Florist at Eflorist. “Moth orchids (Phalaenopsis), Cattleya orchids, and Paphiopedilum orchids are great options as they are more forgiving and adapt well to home environments. When buying an orchid, choose one with healthy green leaves, firm roots, and no signs of pests or diseases.”

You’ll also need to select the appropriate growing medium for your orchid species. The growing medium is a substrate or potting mix used instead of soil.

“Terrestrial orchids, including Paphiopedilum, grow in soil, while most tropical orchids are epiphytes that grow in the air. For terrestrial orchids, use well-draining soil. For tropical epiphyte orchids, surround their roots with bark and sphagnum moss to ensure proper aeration and drainage.”
