JoJo Collins (works available at LagunaART•com and in the physical gallery)

Being an artist is just one expression of my creative life. As an introverted child, I was most happy doing arts and crafts and even producing backyard carnival events for my school friends. Art was the one subject I excelled in throughout my school years. After high school, I attended 7 different colleges in Northern California concentrating on various principles such as basic art practices, silk screening, drawing, stained glass, architecture, art history, pattern drafting and interior design. Throughout the college era I knew I wanted to be an abstract artist but also loved the impressionists sense of color and light.

During the early 70’s I lived in a commune in a beach town in Santa Cruz, CA. Since I always seemed to have a little quirky way of looking at the world and being influenced by the times, I embraced the hippie lifestyle. It was liberating and fascinating and arts and crafts was a huge part of commune life including tie die, batik, ceramics, Indian beading, macramé and stained glass. I continue to love crafts and it has been a huge plus for my party planning business when I need to create décor to complement the theme.

Since I retired in 2010 I picked up acrylic painting to express myself and bring back the creating side of me instead of the business side. I find it rewarding and frustrating but have continued to be involved in online courses, joined an Art League and show my work at a local art gallery. I learn something every day and can see my transition from slapping paint on canvas to making educated decisions that has improved my work every day while staying in the Bohemian lane of art expression.

Michele Morgan

My biggest influence was my high school teacher, Mr. John Kurtz. He threw a blob of white paint onto a painting I was trying to perfect. Wow! Then he smoothed it out in a matter of seconds and showed me how to let go. Nicholas Wilton, from Art2Life, taught me how to try different approaches and let go of a change. What you see in my work are different discoveries that lie way underneath the paint. There are so many layers in my process that sometimes I must sand half of it off which in turn creates another unique look. I do not have a theme most of the time. Although, I am most stimulated by people and nature. My work is animated and has the flavor of abstract impressionism. I might start with a horizon line or a face. I paint whatever suits my soul. The genre of music usually influences how a piece might turn out.

Michele Morgan, a practicing artist, has had over 30 group and solo showings from California to the East Coast, Hawaii, and Texas. She is a graduate of the Interior Design Institute of Newport Beach, California, and took classes at Saddleback and Orange Coast Colleges. She has an extensive background in the graphic and fine arts industry as an artists’ representative, servicing commercial ad agencies, fine art galleries, and private exhibits. Other experiences include being President of the Art Directors and Designers Organization of Orange County; guest speaker and advisor for Orange Coast College and Laguna School of Art and Design; nominee for Woman of the Year by the Orange County Ad News. She owned and operated her own art gallery, Morgan Stevens Gallery, in the late 80’s, She is the owner of The Right Color, an interior design firm specializing in color, design, lighting, remodeling, and art placement. Currently, she represents a small group of artisans for placement in her interior design projects and fine art industry.

Al Esquerra

Al’s approach to creating art is ever changing and experimental by process. He has been a Laguna Beach resident for over 20 years and is active in the local arts community. Al works in multiple mediums including oils, acrylics, watercolor, mixed media, and resin. The patterns in nature and the unique textures they form have always fascinated him. The use of varied natural materials integrated with contemporary painting has resulted in distinctive mixed media pieces. His photography has been a great tool for capturing the intricate designs in nature revealing a world beyond the naked eye.

The use of reflective materials such as embedded metals, gold leaf, and resins contrasted with materials that absorb light form a juxtaposed depiction for a fresh view of a subject. Taking the familiar and showing it through his worldview drives him. Along with being an award-winning painter, illustrator, and designer he has created a number of public art pieces for the city of Laguna Beach.

After attending Chapman University he spent years exploring Europe and Africa. Travel continues to have a major influence on his art. Most recently experiencing Japanese culture in particular. This has led to a passion for succulent gardening and propagating and observing nature’s ever changing beauty and life cycles.

Artist: Jeff Pavone

I am a classically trained artist – with a BA in Studio Art from Queens College University and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art (NYAA). The NYAA was founded in 1982. One of the founders was Andy Warhol. The curriculum was based on the original French Academy, which put an emphasis on human anatomy. Upon Andy Warhol’s death, his estate created a scholarship program for this school and I was one of the first recipients of this Andy Warhol Scholarship in 1988. The school was accredited in 1989 and I was in the very first graduating class in 1990. Since graduating I have worked as a mural painter for Modeworks, a mural company in downtown Manhattan. I have also worked at the Guggenheim Museum and have taught painting and drawing at the Indiana University John Herron School of Art and Design and Mt. San Jacinto College in Southern California. I paint and draw people, landscapes and still lives. My art is an accurate representation of what I see, with emphasis on color and composition. I like to find the beauty in simple, everyday situations and put them on canvas. My goal is to present these ordinary images in an interesting way, using composition, color, and drawing so that the finished product somehow transcends the literal meaning.

“Bouquet of Love” by Linh Vo, Acrylic on Canvas
Available on LagunaART•com gallery in the Shops at Mission Viejo Next to Nordstrom

14.5” x 11.5” x 2.5”

Acrylic on Canvas

Original Artwork

Framed

2003

Description: Enchanted of blooms in romantic red floral vase, a timeless gift choice of expressing “I Love You”

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Linh Vo

Art has always been Linh Vo’s world beginning in her childhood in Vietnam. Later when she worked in the “super dry” Technology industry in Los Angeles for over 30 years, she took every opportunity to apply her creativity and artistic skills to her projects, and made the workplace much more productive and enjoyable. People resonated with and appreciated her personal touches in her designs – an approach that in the technology world is often overlooked by many yet fully embraced by a select few such as Apple stylish products. In 2017, Linh felt a strong desire to reconnect with her childhood dream by stepping into the art world, building upon her myriad of life experiences and to narrate that dream wholeheartedly with the world.

Linh seeks to exude – and has received praise for – joy and inspiration in her arts. In her vision to reach this goal, she strategizes the judicious use of colors in various settings, whether it is intuitive, personal or purposeful, to attain a sense of balance, create timeless elegance, or evoke feelings of happiness and memories. This, mixed with additional design techniques covering shapes, brush strokes and visual effects heightens the realism of the subjects, and in so doing, engage the viewers’ interests, captivate their imagination and leave a lasting impression.

“Flickering Flames”” by Ladan Abbaspour, Acrylic on Canvas available on LagunaART•com

30” X 40” x 1.5”

Acrylic on Canvas

Original Artwork

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Ladan Abbaspour

Born and raised in Iran, I pursued a degree in Chemistry, but I was always painting in my free time. Painting has been my passion as well as my form of therapy enabling me to express my feelings and transfer them onto canvas. I love to create different types of textures in my paintings, and I’m typically drawn to using bright colors. I work mainly with Acrylic, and watercolors, and also enjoy creating abstract paintings used in Mixed Media. Nature itself inspires many of my paintings, landscapes help me to visualize new shapes and colors. I aim to capture light in different angles and use my imagination to give the viewer a new way to appreciate nature through my art.

One of my paintings, “The Walk, earned recognition in the March Madness 2021 project where the piece was transferred onto a mural in downtown Indianapolis. I’ve also had the privilege of being represented by several galleries such as Art On Main Gallery and Gifts in Carmel, Indiana, High Frequency Arts in Fishers, Indiana, and Easter Conservation Services Ltd in Indianapolis. Additionally, being juried in numerous art shows and fairs has allowed my work to be collected by art lovers in the states and beyond. Most recently, my piece titled, “Hope and Dream,” was selected for acquisition by the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, a humbling acknowledgment of the power of art in healing and inspiration. Through my art, I intend to instill in my community a sense of love, excitement, and appreciation for the vibrant tapestry of nature that surrounds us.

Angela Su

Angela Su (b.1990) is a self-taught artist based in Southern California, United States. She has been drawing since childhood and won her first award in grade school. She began painting abstract expressionist art in 2021.
Painting is the realization of her authentic self; it allows her to tap into a universal omnipresence beyond the transient physical forms. Albeit a physical act, it quiets conscious thoughts and takes her into the vast radiance of her true nature, allowing the reality of awareness to manifest onto the canvase.

There is an “is-ness” that exists when all the noise from our thoughts and the outside world are silenced- the presence that cannot be defined by words. Her works act as a passage for us to remember the essence of who we truly are.

“Golden Hour Stroll in Crystal Cove Cliffs” by Samuel Pretorius, Acrylic on Canvas

16” x 20”

Original Artwork

Framed

2022
Description: It was a beautiful California summer’s evening, the golden hour on a Friday around 7 PM. I was returning from a long walk on the beach when I turned around and was caught by a breathtaking view of the sea and the coastal shrubs, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun hitting the tops of the bushes and the park sign. I found it fascinating how there were many hidden triangles within the scene, tying the whole composition together. As an artist, I couldn’t help but appreciate the natural symmetry.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Samuel Pretorius

My aim is to create art that evokes memories of places and people. A fleeting image that you long to see again, a landscape that you will never forget, or a place you yearn to visit, captured in a few brush strokes to hold on to that memory forever.
