3 of 3 We recently engaged our team by asking what inspires them, encouraging them to reflect on the people, places, or things that fuel their creativity. Kirei and Aliza, two of our Summer Interns selected some interesting topics that inspire them...

Kirei:

1. White buildings like Johnston Marklee’s Hill House strip the project of color and material, allowing simplicity to shine. Its simple form and details captivate the public.

2. Photography teaches and trains our eyes to recognize the beauty in everyday sights. The interplay of color, light, and shadow is captured through a space no larger than the palm of your hand.

3. Fashion is a game of balance and harmony using colors, proportions, and textures. How each garment works with the other is similar to the relationship between how materials and form work together in architecture.

Aliza:

1. Florence and my travels abroad have had a huge impact on how I think about architecture. The differing layout of cities and inspirational urban layout has inspired me to think and design for a better future in the U.S

2. I traveled to the south of France and was so inspired by the patterns and beauty of the water I came across. Water is so fluid and powerful it gives me inspiration on how to design buildings.

3. Physically modeling to get my ideas into real life has always been a great way of expressing ideas and finding inspiration. When I can’t recreate exactly what I’m imagining, the materials and techniques I use can allow me to find new solutions and creative ideas for a project.

2 of 3 We recently engaged our team by asking what inspires them, encouraging them to reflect on the people, places, or things that fuel their creativity. Amandine, one of our Project Managers selected three things that inspire her...

Amandine: “I have always been inspired by the architecture of the case study houses.
I am impressed how architects responded to the demand of building cheap and easily constructed houses during the post war building boom while designing innovative, founctionnel and warm houses.
As a French architect, I am grateful to work in the Los Angeles area, where this architectural style was born.”

“As much as light impacts architecture, architecture also impacts light.”

2. Olivetti Showroom by Carlo Scarpa

“Art, craft, and design don’t necessarily exist in isolation from one another. In fact, they can simultaneously contribute and enhance architecture.”

3. Museo Gypsotheca Antonio Canova by Carlo Scarpa

“Extend the white of the statues to the walls and cut the blue of the sky. Spatial skylights - cubes and prisms - that cut out the sky and determine the vertices of the dematerialized space through light.”

We recently engaged our team by asking what inspires them, encouraging them to reflect on the people, places, or things that fuel their creativity. Christine Miller, our Studio Director had some great and unique sources of inspiration!

1. James Turrell’s Skyspace installation...Blurring the lines between art and architecture. Light and Space movement works capture the essence of natural light.

Clean sharp lines in architectural design evoke a sense of simplicity, contributing to the sleek and minimalist aesthetic of a modern home. A Dutch front door, with its split design allows for the top portion to remain open while the bottom is closed, creating an inviting entryway that promotes airflow and interaction with the surrounding environment.

From its location at the mouth of Newport Harbor, Harbor Master enjoys commanding views of the harbor entrance and the famous Wedge surf break beyond. These views form the backdrop to a study in loft-style living where space is at a premium, but remains flexible, and filled with light.

Beachitos. 3 of 3

There’s a lot packed into this special building – a unique structural solution and a robust, energy-saving envelope, a significant living space program and an abundance of outdoor spaces. Together they conspire to create a distinctive living experience, regulated and informed by the prefabricated system that defines the building envelope, informed by the special site, the proximity to the sea, and the unique couple whose vision for a new way of living has found form and substance.

This couple envisioned well into the future, not only about growing old in their home, but also in how they’d fashion their home with new technologies and construction methods. Manufactured building parts, columns, beams, frames, and panels could be shipped to the location in stages, erected by a few workers, and create a new kind of building, both for themselves, and for the community. Nothing like it had been completed in Laguna Beach, or even Orange County.

Beachitos. 1 of 3

Between the hurrying traffic along Coast Highway and the tumbling waves of the coastline lies an irregular-shaped lot on which a couple wished to build their home. The city’s zoning allowed for a duplex, and the couple embraced the idea of a home they could enjoy now and age-in-place with as they grew older.

House on Kings Road. 3 of 3

Orienting the home on the lot was influenced by a number of factors: the steep topography, a restrictive height limit, and an easement that bisected the lot close to the street. The resulting compact footprint makes best use of the limited space available and invites opportunities for rooms to borrow space from each other, lending an air of spaciousness to the otherwise compact design.
