We are pleased to announce that Providence has tentatively reached a new contract agreement with Blue Shield of California. This new agreement would ensure many Blue Shield members have continued in-network access to their Providence doctors, clinics and hospitals.

We understand how unsettling contract negotiations can be and appreciate your patience and support throughout the process. We are grateful that Blue Shield is committed to aligning with Providence to provide affordable care, accessible to members throughout California. We look forward to continued collaboration with Blue Shield and to serving our patients and California communities with exceptional health care services.

If you received a letter indicating you have been reassigned to a different provider, please call the phone number on the back of your member ID card and request that Blue Shield of California transfer you back to your Providence medical group provider.

In an effort to reach an agreement, Providence made a fair and equitable proposal to Blue Shield of California on March 13, 2024. It has now been more than a month, and Blue Shield has yet to formally respond.

With time running out, Providence is deeply concerned about the thousands of patients covered by Blue Shield who rely on Providence for their care. If Blue Shield does not work with Providence on a resolution, more than 110,000 Californians may be out of network for Providence hospitals, clinics and medical groups on June 1, 2024.

For months, Providence has negotiated in good faith, seeking reasonable terms that will help cover the rising cost of care due to inflation and that will help ensure market-competitive wages for caregivers and physicians who care for Blue Shield members. On behalf of our patients, Providence is also asking Blue Shield to stop denying or delaying coverage for needed care.

Patients are encouraged to contact Blue Shield directly with questions and to urge Blue Shield to reach an agreement with Providence NOW at 1-800-393-6130.

04/05/2024

With Blue Shield unwilling to cover the cost of care, more than 110,000 Blue Shield commercial HMO patients may lose access to their Providence hospital and physicians starting June 1.

At Providence, providing exceptional patient care is our top priority. That’s why we’re negotiating in good faith with Blue Shield. Many of our patients are being denied treatment for essential care, including medications, therapies and procedures. In fact, denials are up 11.7 percent in 2024.

We’re hopeful we can reach an agreement with Blue Shield in the coming weeks. Unless the contract expires, nothing changes, and you can still see your Providence doctors. In the meantime, talk to your human resources department, insurance broker or Blue Shield directly at 800-541-6652 to express your concerns and to find a way to stay with your doctor and Providence should we not reach an agreement.

Thank you for entrusting Providence with your care.

Get to know Amy Bartolone, CST, lead surgical technician who plays an important role supporting the team. We asked her to answer a few questions ❤️

---

When and why did you choose a career in ?

“When I was eight years old, my mother had emergency surgery; it was my first exposure to people in the medical field. I remember vividly the kindness and compassion from everyone I encountered in the hospital and wanted to grow up and be just like them. And after 25 years in health care, I still love what I do!”

What draws you to surgery and surgery in particular?

“The part of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery that I love is that it challenges me mentally, physically and technologically. I thrive on being able to anticipate what the surgeon needs before they ask for it.”

If you had to choose three words to describe yourself, what would they be?

“Passionate, reliable and a perfectionist! I am a team player and take pride that my colleagues say I have high standards and expectations.”

When you're not working, what do you like to do?

"Church, family, friends and yoga: these are my happy places. They help me reset and be the best version of myself when I return to work."

Thank you for being part of the , Amy!
