Shimeru Judo & Jiu Jitsu Club

Another fun day at Shimeru with one of our young students who recently moved up from the young kids class getting his white/black belt — with a huge smile as always 💪🏻💪🏻 A couple bonus pics from the bjj and judo classes as we welcome a few of our favorite visitors and people start getting back to work after a nice holiday season.

Good day for some of our youth competitors today at as everyone got at least one win. Just four competed, getting an overall record of 6-3 with two golds, one silver and one bronze. Of the three losses, only one by submission, and the other two were in Leo’s bracket where he and his opponent traded very close wins by points. Now back to work to build on what we did well and fix our mistakes. Great job, team! Looking forward to more of our team getting out there in 2024 👏

Four competitors today and three silvers. Jordon gutted out a few strong performances and showed more growth in his game. Sammy lost a close one in the final, and I lost a less-than-close one in the final. Very proud of the team, including Antonio who dominated in his first fight and showed very clear progress in his second competition. Let’s keep working and get after it in 2024 💪🏻

Three years at black belt vs 30 years at black belt! Very grateful to receive my first degree tonight from . Thanks to the many many people who helped me reach this milestone, not least of which my family for supporting, sacrificing, and finally giving in and joining me 😂 Thanks to Orlando for shaping much of my bjj philosophy, to Tom for supporting and encouraging me to start Shimeru, to my brothers/training partners for all the smeshing and support, and especially to my many friends/students who make Shimeru what it is. Judo and Jiu Jitsu have give me more than I can ever repay, but we’re trying our best to pay it forward and share all these great arts have to offer. Thank you!

Tonight was one of the great nights in the young history of Shimeru, as we got to introduce Master Carlson Gracie Jr. to our team and were treated to an evening of great technique. We were joined by Professor Tom from west coast headquarters, and my coach, Professor Orlando from Menifee, along with several other black belts from the team. We also marked my third year as a black belt, and I was awarded first degree. It’s an honor to represent Carlson Gracie Team, and we’re excited for a big 2024! Thanks to all for coming out!

Congrats to our competitors this weekend at Unfortunately had a number of scratches for various reasons but it happens 🤷🏻‍♂️ The hard work of prep isn’t wasted, it made you better. Shout out to my man Sebastian who fought up a rank and still found a win, and to a couple students who wanted to go compete after only being back in training for a few weeks. Proud of this team, now on to the next one 💪🏻💪🏻

Big congrats to Estevan “The Pride of Shimeru” on getting his purple belt many many years before we said you would 😂 The growth he’s achieved in two years at Shimeru—in jiu jitsu, judo, as a young man, and as a coach—are attributable to his work ethic and mindset. He’s a fighter. Great work Sammy, and great work pops for bringing this dude up.

We enjoyed some great judo training today, both at in the morning, and at Shimeru tonight with several guests. Many thanks to all, particularly senseis Ismael, Jack and Gage.

Judo is a small community in our corner of SoCal, so it’s important that we get together to make each other better. Today we got to train with friends from at least three other dojos, and for that were very grateful 🙏🏻

Two silvers and two bronze for our kids today at 🥈🥈🥉🥉 Proud of all those who got out there and fought hard 💪🏻💪🏻 We had some exciting wins and clear progress for a few of our teammates, as well as some gut-wrenching misses whose outcome turned on the smallest of details in this tough game of inches. Back to work tomorrow and prepping for the next one! Big thanks to our coaches and all the families who support us and are helping us build the foundations of a great program 🫡

Congrats to Sammy and Rachel on their medals today 🥇🥇🥈 Avenged a prior loss today. Great job also to Jordan who had more wins than anyone but in a monster bracket (4-1), and Vaughnski who came up short by a couple points in his two fights but showed huge improvements since his last competition 💪🏻💪🏻 Very proud of you all. Excited for our kids to compete tomorrow!

Kids judo + nogi today 💪🏻💪🏻 Such a fun group, working hard every day ⚙️ It’s awesome to see a mat full of kids able to throw, sweep, shoot and submit!

Time to head 🎒 Jiu Jitsu and judo are great alternatives to the traditional ball sports that have rigid practice and competition schedules, and only run a couple months at a time. At Shimeru, we offer unlimited attendance year-round, and the option to earn rank in two martial arts for one low rate—and we have an amazing family plan. Train as often or as little as you like, and same with competing! Maybe your son or daughter doesn’t hate sports, but simply hasn’t found something active they find practical. Late to post this but shoutout to all of our seven awesome junior competitors who went and fought their hearts out at this past Sunday. The squad came away with a gold, silver and a couple bronze, along with invaluable experience—especially for the several first-time competitors. Congrats to all! Off to the next one 💪🏻💪🏻

Sammy back on top yesterday with a 3-0 showing in his bracket, beating out some tough competition. No points scored against him in this bracket, and one sub. Took a historically savage beating in the winners bracket tho, stunning the capacity crowd who sat in silence until the ambulance arrived. Nah, it was a tough back and forth fight against a stout competitor that could’ve gone either way but we gotta keep him humble.

Top priority 👉🏻 Have fun and help them fall in love with judo and jiu jitsu. Statistically, a few of these kiddos will still be training when they graduate high school. These are the lucky few who reap the benefits of growing up in a positive, challenging environment that will mold them into strong, confident young adults. Our goal is to maximize lives impacted. We’re here for it 🙌🏻
